I've seen them in some markets, starting about 5 years ago. I've never bought one, either.

I've never seen them in our grocery stores. I read about them on Wikipedia and they sound interesting. They're used in desserts, but some restaurants also use them as a meat substitute, making 'pulled pork' and taco fillings from them. I thought this was interesting. "When pruned, the inner part (core) secretes a sticky, milky liquid, which can hardly be removed from the skin, even with soap and water. To clean the hands after "unwinding" the pulp, an oil or other solvent is used. For example, street vendors in Tanzania, who sell the fruit in small segments, provide small bowls of kerosene for their customers to cleanse their sticky fingers." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackfruit

Love me some jack fruit. As I don't eat meat, I'll take the jack fruit and make sliders out of it. It has a similar consistency to pulled pork and holds BBQ sauce and compliments pickled onions or slaw quite well.

I have bought a whole one, but only when Iβm having parties and need to feed a bunch of people. Otherwise, yeah, itβs a massive amount of food. You can buy a normal sized portion of it, pre cut, from most grocery stores these days in the vegan sections. Iβd prefer to get it unseasoned so I can flavor it myself, but it usually comes in varieties of flavors.

I guess the consistency is similar to a mango, and from a taste standpoint, it's kind of like a sweeter banana. But when you cook it up with BBQ sauce, it really does taste kinda like pulled pork!
