It's one of the most fun films in the franchise, and I love watching it.
It's a fun world building film that has a lot of great character interactions while the villain grows in the background, and honestly one of the best parts for me about it is they kept the villains personal like the first film and didn't feel the need to go with some world threatening blowout to try and top it.
Seeing Black Widow show up for the first time was really exciting, and I remember being the first time you felt the MCU really starting to grow. Scarlett was super badass and sexy at the same time and I still prefer that long curly hair.
WAR MACHINE!!! Damn War Machine shows up, Don Cheadle was excellent as Rhodey, and that suit looked absolutely bad ass. I loved the party scene where they fight in the house, and then of course Rhodey getting used and abused before kicking ass at the end. It was just awesome to watch him come to life. Especially a cool touch, was the blast that separated them as friends during that fight, was the same move that brought them together at the end. Just a solid touch that wasn't obvious foreshadowing.
And speaking of War Machine, the Justin Hammer decks out the Mark 2 montage is one of the best scenes in all of the MCU if you ask me. "I can see it's too disco for you", "It would make Ulysses look like it was written in crayon", "You're like a Sphinx, I can't read you." Just an awesome fucking scene, and I still love it 7 years later.
And speaking of Justin Hammer, I absolutely loved the overly confident, charming, but clearly not in control portrayal of Sam Rockwell. He just totally nailed it. He isn't supposed to be intimidating, he's supposed to be somebody Stark knows he's better than, and it comes off perfectly, where he basically accidentally enables the main villain to get exactly what he wants, and the entire time he doesn't realize that he's not going to get what he wants. It's brilliant. I mean the guy has Italian ice cream imported from San Francisco. What a pompous douche!!!
The main villain of course is Whiplash, and I love everything about him. I love Mikey Rourke's tough guy portrayal, but inside he's brilliant. It's a great contrast. His prison break scene was fantastic, largely because you could really see he didn't fully know what was going on, but he understood what to do. He never had any respect for Hammer and it showed, and the opening scene of his dad dying is a highlight of the film.
The Monte' Carlo fight scene where whiplash first reveals his full suit is spectacular. The cars flying, the new Iron Man suitcase suit, Pepper freaking out, Whiplash just going for it all without a care, it was all awesome. You could really sense that all that man cared about, was ruining Tony.
And I'm glad the film let the villain storyline split out on it's own for awhile. Tony thought it was done. He had no idea what was about to happen at the end and I find it exciting and a little different in the best way possible.
The scenes with Coulson and Nick Fury showing up to consult with stark were great world building moments. I was cheering knowing that Marvel was going to go full out with Shield, and it was this film, not the Nick Fury post credit scene, that got me truly pumped for an Avengers film.
And how great was the brief period of downtime where Tony was watching the reel of his father, speaking to him from the grave. One of the very finest moments in all of the MCU, and all the more now that we know his ultimate fate.
This is one of those films I had a lot of fun with when it came out, and it's only aged like wine.

Thank you! I love Iron Man 2. I get tired of the self proclaimed hipsters picking certain movies and then endlessly berating them on the internet. Listen up hipsters, here's a list of movies that I like; The Incredible Hulk, The First Avenger, Thor the Dark World, The Star Wars Prequel Trilogy, The Hobbit Trilogy, The Force Awakens, Spider-Man 3, and Rogue One. So there.

It's about time this movie got the love it deserves, that's all I have to say.

I do really enjoy Iron Man 2 as well. It was disappointing to me at first because it's not exactly what I wanted in a sequel, but there is a lot to like about it. I really like how personal the story is for Tony. He's completely isolated, everyone is gunning for him and he is literally dying. That sort of dark personal journey is one thing I like in my sequels. I also love that race track battle. The suitcase suit is badass!
I do sort of dislike Black Widow in this one though. She feels shoehorned in to me and she just doesn't interest me as a character.
Ultimately I dont like this one nearly as much as the first but it is miles better than the third.

I actually love Black Widow here and think she's perfectly placed, but I am really happy you mentioned the he's dying part. That whole story arc with him building the new arc reactor was amazing. As far as sequels go, I figured out a long time ago to stop going in wanting stuff and I wouldn't set myself up for disappointment when they didn't make the fan fic I had in mind.

How many times have you heard some raging fanboy bitch and moan about some story beat and immediately suggest how it could have been done better (under his all-knowing and wise tutelage). If anyone is so convinced of their ability to rewrite creative professionals, I would propose that you sit down with a pencil and a legal pad and get to it - can't wait to see your name in the credits (Screenplay by Fanboy!), till then, STFU. This goes double for "source material" Nazis. SaveSaveSaveSaveSaveSave

I really enjoy IM2 as well... And I too, love the Suitcase Suit... One of the documentaries produced for the film, mentioned that the surface area/volume of the suitcase, could actually cover a man... and seeing all the moving gears and parts in action to surround Tony, that's was just incredible, because it looked so realistic... While it is very basic in terms of what it can do, That's the one I would want!

It's so much fun to go in and just enjoy these films, let them sink in a bit, think about them, maybe see it a second time, drop all of your "I wanted" comments and just enjoy it.

Yeah, that's a mistake I still make every time. Lol. And I also love the scenes in his basement/garage where he's figuring out how to build the new element. Great stuff.

It's hard, because like you I enjoy trying to put the pieces together and guess. What I found helps is come up with 4 or 5 predictions instead of settling on one that you think is perfect. The moment you think you've got the perfect story, slap yourself, and come up with 3 other ideas that could work and you won't go in thinking you've solved the case.

I often find myself wanting ridiculously specific things from the movies I look forward to. Star Wars Force Awakens was the perfect example of this.

I always liked it. Outside of the action, though, it's not very good.

Yeah I used to catch myself doing that, and I remember finally wondering to myself why I did that, because I knew it wasn't going to play out like I thought it would and that everybody else was doing the exact same thing, which means it's impossible for everybody to be right. This is the reason why sequels often get down voted even if they're great, because a certain number of people always think they should have done something else, and I just don't want to watch movies that way.

Iron Man 2 is also (just like IM3) not the best MCU film. I do enjoy it but its in the bottom of the barrel. There are at least 10 other MCU movies I like better.
That being said its still a really enjoyable movie.

Exactly the reason I like GotG vol. 2 better than the first one GotG 1 was fresh, funny and a very big surprise. But on every next viewing the movie becomes more blend. I saw GotG vol 2 three times now and its getting better every time. I think in time this will be the popular opinion. The same is true btw for IM2, IM3, TFA and TIH. These movies also get better with time.

Almost every MCU film has gotten better with time, and that's especially true with films like Civil War adding so much to the overall story.

One of the worst cinema experience I had the displeasure to sit through; this one was a terrible bore and surprisingly vapid even for a genre film. The first one was quite all right, but the second one strictly followed the sequel curse of more of the same but with no idea where to go, except for promoting further sequels and spin offs.
Never even bothered with the third one after this, they say it is equally bad, so I guess I saved me some quality life time after all.

I like it too it was solid fun. Maybe not the best MCU movie but still an enjoyable film, solid 6.5/10.
