Between the alternate cuts of Blade Runner, the Richard Donner cut of Superman II, Zack Snyder’s Justice League, the current demands for an Ayer cut of Suicide Squad, and now this, WB is basically the gold standard of movies that people demand director’s cuts for.

Kangaroo Jack basically plays out like a live action cartoon. It's silly and knows it. I thought it was hilarious and Jerry O'Connell and Anthony Anderson made a fun duo. It's twist ending is hilarious.
I've never been big fan of these alternate cuts reagarding any movie. For me, the theatrical version is the only real cut of the movie.
I kept wondering if this was actually true or not. Kangaroo Jack pissed me off so much as a kid. They made it look as if it were a movie about a talking kangaroo, but it was just one scene that the makers of the preview decided to use.
Heck the story wasn’t when much of a kids movie story. It took me till I was way older to find out it was about 2 characters having to pay a gangster back. UNMM WTF?
I’d like to see this R rated cut to see if it’s any better honestly. I mean it can’t be any worse....right?
The movie was originally called DOWN AND UNDER (if you watch the behind-the-scenes featurettes, you can see that title written on the clapperboard). After the success of SNOW DOGS, Jerry Bruckheimer asked for some changes to the script. That's how we ended up with this tonally confused movie with tacked-on scenes featuring the title character that have no effect on the plot.

Yes, they did that on purpose to fool people, because they knew they wouldn't buy tickets otherwise.

No effect on the plot? What about the jacket with the $50,000 that Louis puts on the kangaroo and they have to chase the kangaroo throughout the movie to retrieve it?

I actually don't think I watched this all the way through but from what I know about it, it's incredibly mismarketed. It seemed like they were making an edgy, "mature" (using that term loosely) comedy and knew nobody was gonna watch it so they threw in a CG talking kangaroo and made it more PG level at the last minute to get more attention.
I am actually kinda curious what this would be like though.

That’s pretty much exactly what it is. It was supposed to be an adult mafia comedy, but test audiences didn’t respond well to it, outside of the part with the kangaroo, so the studio decided to retool it into a kid’s movie, and inserted additional scenes with the kangaroo. That dream sequence where the kangaroo talks was specifically added in just so they could plaster it all over the marketing, thus giving the impression that it would be a wacky kid’s movie about a mischievous talking kangaroo.
