Think about it - what if he fathered a kid at 13 and his kid in turn fathered a kid at 13......

Not sure why some athletes do this when there isn't any chance somebody would confuse them with their young children. If you're both adults of some renown, I understand the logic. Otherwise, what's the point of making the distinction? "Just so you know it isn't a toddler coming to the plate, I'm Travis Lakins SR!"
Another weird thing going on lately is how everyone is a III, IV, or V all of the sudden. His first few years in the NBA, Terry Rozier was just Terry Rozier. Then he suddenly became Terry Rozier III. What changed? Did he clone himself?

Didn't Steve Smith SR start doing that in the NFL toward the end of his career? It's probably a common thing now, I just don't notice it as much.
