I have always been a huge fan of Ms. Rogers, and I even met her back in the 70's. Such a lovely and gracious person, and a very versatile actress!
My one gripe is the way Hollywood did her makeup. I realize she came through the studio system, and they wanted a certain "image", but I always thought her makeup was too harsh for her skin tone and hair (no matter what shade of blonde it was). It's more jarring in the black and white films than her color films. The heavy black eye makeup (lashes and liner) and the RED lipstick didn't do her justice. She should have had light corals and either softer brown-gray or gray-tone eye makeup (lashes and liner).

She softened her makeup as she got older, a very smart decision. The black lashes and red lips were the style in the 30’s. Only very high class society women, like royals wore pale lipstick then. It seems to me her makeup is more modest in Follow the fleet and Top Hat than in the gold digger movies. Maybe TGE brash makeup was part of her chorus girl character.

I liked it when they softened her looks. I understand that was THE RAGE back then, but in some instances, it didn't do the actors any favors.

Only saw one of her movies and it was her in a supporting role for Black Widow (1954). Good cast including Van Heflin but it's a bit stiff and lifeless, I feel. Check out her early work, she was dancing dynamite, an underappreciated technical performer with an unbeatable work ethic.

Red lipstick was a key fashion trend of the 40s, looking at images of Ginger Rogers not in character she is often wearing dark liner and red lipstick. Her red lip glamour an inspiration still today, evident from the many online makeup tutorials that aspire for the Ginger Rogers style... Asked in 1939 if she ever read beauty articles, seeking some beauty secret for herself? " I’m an easy mark for any and every advertisement which promises that a certain product will make me ravishing. If it’s a lipstick, I promptly send for a half dozen and then, after trying them briefly, I invariably return to my original stand-by..."
