I’m kinda confused by the dislike for this Batman movie. Yes I’ve read the Killing Joke and it’s very good and I see why it’s people’s favorite Batman comic. I guess I’m trying to see why people don’t like the movie adaption.
Everyone gives a good performance. Mark Hamill always gives a great performance of the Joker. Kevin as Batman again great performance. I mean there’s really not anyone who does not do a great reading.
The movie follows the comic ALMOST exactly. It’s almost TOO FAITHFUL in a way. Is that one of the problems why people don’t like it?
The only thing I really didn’t like was the relationship between Batman and Batgirl. I understand why it was needed, but I always saw Batgirl as a daughter to Batman so it was kind of creepy to see them have sex.
I mean what did people really want from this?

The entire prologue is absolute garbage, but even ignoring that, the rest of the movie is pretty lame too. The animation and voice acting are stiff, scenes are padded just to fill out the incredibly short runtime, and the movie is just plain boring all around.

Ok, so I never read the comic, but I had a hard time getting into this. Voice acting was good, no complaint there but I was bored by it.

If there's anything nice I can saw about it, it's the voice acting isn't bad. The prologue is needless padding;I know they were probably scrambling to pad it out past sixty minutes.

I just finished reading the comic book and it is a masterpiece.
Yeah, the added Barbara Gordon stuff in the movie is crap and pulls it down.
The comic book is straight to the point and extremely powerful. The animated movie is not. It feels like a watered down version of the comic book.

The movie is a watered down version. The inspiration for Batman (1989), The Dark Knight and Joker (2019) is all there.

It really can't be understated how bad the opening is. Not only is it just generally awful on its own merits (a villain named Paris Franz? Batman sleeping with his surrogate daughter?) but it's even worse when you consider it was added to patronize certain critics of the comic and "fix" their problems. Long story short, some fans didn't like a strong female character like Batgirl being reduced to a prop just to torment male characters. The people behind this adaptation got to thinking about how to fan the flames and make their Killing Joke more "feminist", and their bright idea was to make her a dumb slut who falls for bad guys, has sex with her boss, gets hilariously ghosted by him, whines to her 2001 era romcom Gay Best Friend about it, then quits because she can't hack it. No matter where you stand on the comic controversy (I think it's a little overblown), they somehow found a way to make it way worse.
What did people want? That's pretty simple. A straight 30-45 minute adaptation of the comic. In fact, there are fan edits of this movie that turn it into exactly that.
If they really wanted to try and win over people who think the comic is sexist, they could have used that extra screentime to focus on Barbara recovering and becoming Oracle. It'd at least tie into the rest of the movie.

I remember the animated film didn’t feature the shadow at the end. I don’t think you can tell the story right without that shadow.

I watch all the animated movies though. I only read The Killing Joke, because I wanted to make the comparison. I might read The Long Halloween. There is an animated version being released soon.

I prefer Year One as well.
