In 1996, 19-year-old college student Paul Flores and two other students walked 19-year-old Kristin Smart home after a college party. The other two students eventually broke away, leaving Flores to finish the walk with Smart alone. Smart was later reported missing. Flores claimed he'd walked her home and didn't know what happened to her. Police noticed he had a black eye. He claimed he got the back eye playing basketball, then changed this story and said he got it while fixing a car. The prevailing theory over the years is that Flores killed Smart, possibly while attempt to rape her, and that he then called his dad to help dispose of the body, which has never been found. Flores repeatedly invoked his Fifth Amendment right not to speak under questioning by police, and later when called to testify at a civil trial filed by the Smart family. The Flores family later filed a harassment suit against the Smart family for accusing them of having something to do with the disappearance. Interest in the it's renewed when a podcast went over it a couple of years ago. There was some activity in early 2020 when police seized some vehicles belonging to the Flores family, and also a report that an ex-FBI agent who was friendly with the Smart family tipped them off that something big was about to happen. Now, more than a year later, Paul Flores has final been charged with murder, and his father Ruben (now 80 years old) has been charged as an accessory. Personally, I've been aware of the case since I saw an Unsolved Mysteries episode about it over 20 years ago.
