“The Walking Dead”?
There was a point where TWD was made by Frank Darabont, and it’s ratings got as high as 24M + viewers. It was the highest watched television show on cable ever. Getting ratings higher than network (first time in history).
Now it’s a shamble of its former self.
Has a show ever been that popular and fall that far?

Do you mean in quality while it was being produced? Or just declined in popularity...ever?
Certainly The Cosby Show was incredibly popular and now, AFAIK, no one is showing it.

Yeah, that's a good contender.

The Walking Dead is kinda in a unique situation because it's existed in a time of change for how and when people watch TV. When it started watching "Live TV" was still fairly popular. It was possible to bring in those big types of ratings every week. But over the course of the last 10 years you've had a lot of people switch over from cable to exclusively streaming. You also have to factor in illegal viewership on line too. So to your question TWD probably has seen one of the biggest declines in viewership of any show on at least a linear level, but I also think it's hard to know for sure how many people are still watching it today.

The ratings have absolutely plummeted for TWD. I haven't watched since season 8.

Dunno. I kind of stopped watching 5 years ago. Although I did binge the last few seasons at some point out of curiosity. The days of eagerly awaiting the next episode ended something around Neagans arrival.

Cosby Show airs on the TV One network on cable.

Cosby Show airs on the TV One network on cable. Oh...ok...I guess I was wrong. I heard that one of the kids that was in it...now a man, had been pretty much living on the royalties but after Cosby fell from grace he had to get a job. But maybe where it IS showing isn't paying much. But it certainly did decline in popularity.

It's not just the loss of Darabont, but the quality plummeted after The Governor.

The comics go through a similar problem. Finding new and interesting situations to put your characters in during a zombie apocalypse. How many times can you watch the group build a semi safe space only to have it torn down somehow to start anew up the road?

I stopped watching it with the appearance of Negan - a brutish version of the Governor.

I mean I got tired of having the premiere and the finale as the only good episodes per season.

That formula...of having a few good episodes sandwich a ton of mediocre/boring episodes wore me down. It took until just after Negans arrival for me to call it quits tho. I loved Negans initial episodes but then they went back to their town and things got kinda quiet for an episode and then the next one they were just living a boring ‘wait for our moment’ life and I just threw in the towel. I joked at the time that I wished Negan would kill everyone and become the shows new character. It wouldn’t have worked as far as the masses go...but I’d have loved it.

FEAR THE WALKING DEAD has been the superior show for some years now.

I actually liked the episodes after the prison and Governor, when they split up and followed the train tracks to Terminus.
Some people hated those.
Daryl and Beth was great character development. Carol and Tyreese. Rick, Carl and Michone. I felt like it was a good break after the giant episodes with the war at the prison.
They could have done so much more with the cannibals at Terminus.
I think, imho. They should have had the death of Beth episode. They meet the preacher. Then after they decided to leave Georgia and go to Washington to “Alexandria”... they should have ended the show.
They should have just shown them driving off in the RV, looking ominously for an answer. The as they panned out, you see hoards and hoards of zombies... “The End”
You as a viewer decide what happened.

He did bring the comic to the screen and was an Executive Producer (he only directed one episode and wrote 8, only two on his own)but there are quite a few EP's on the show including one with as an impressive track record - Gale Anne-Hurd - who still works on the show. As for a implied decline after Darabont's departure, that's not true. After Darabont left, before season 3, the show's ratings exceeded those under Darabont's tenure for the next 6 seasons. The record breaking ratings were during Season 5, long after Darabont left. Personally I still enjoy the show, though do now prefer Fear. I can't think of a single show that has gone on for 10 seasons and did not suffer a decline in ratings and/or quality over the later years.

Just so you know, it was the highest ratings after Darabont left, yes. But it was HIS world building that garnered the popularity. The decline happened when the show runners didn’t know what to do with the word he built. Even though season 3 had higher ratings, it wasn’t as well received as season one or two. It just so happened that season 3 was airing at the time word of mouth got around at how good the show was. Season one is cinematic. For example: I didn’t know about TWD until season 3 was about to air. They put season 1 and 2 on NETFLIX. So I caught up with the show and started watching Season 3 live each week. I know lots of people who did the same thing. And I know season 1 and 2 is what got me hooked.

Season 1 was more cinematic because primarily it was a shorter season with a larger budget. The showrunners knew what to do...they were following the comic book series. I would say it lost it's way with Darabont in the second season being stuck on Heshal's farm so long...something that was NOT in the comic. If the showrunners didn't know what they were doing why did viewing figures increase years after Darabont's departure?

The first show runner after Darabont was his co producer for season 1-2, so he had an idea of what to do. It’s like saying “The Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions were better films than the Matrix because they made more money at the box office.”
