Not the biggest fan of the series, think the devoted following they have doesn't match the quality of the movies, but I think this was a respectable enough entry.

I stopped with the third film.
I hear a fifth one is on the way.

I've droned on about this so many times, but they forgot what made Scream 1 & 2 when they made 3 & 4. They went way overboard with the meta deconstruction aspect. Yes, that was there in the first two movies, but that's just the stuff that made genre fans and critics chuckle. First and foremost they were good because they set the slasher movie back in reality. Gone were zombie killers, over the top creative kills that could never work, sex for boobs sake, and characters being stupid for no reason. Scream followed the Halloween '78 or Black Christmas mold, it was a realistic killer stalking realistic characters in a realistic town, the authorities are present but always one step behind, it was fun and funny, suspenseful and not so gory it was alienating. When you finally reach the final reveal, which walks the line of obviousness, it takes a turn and the mood becomes that of a true crime thriller. Billy and Stu's rambling, psychotic bragging plays out like the recitation of a school shooters manifesto, it feels real and scarier than any of the kills we saw before, but then it serves us up the cherry on top as we get to watch these guys get outsmarted and picked off like one of their own victims. Scream 4 there's almost no reality because it's a town that seems to be run by teenagers, the authorities aren't one step behind, they're blatantly clueless, and no thought was put into how the killings were carried out, it is mildly saved by Emma Roberts performance at the end and really should've went for the bleak ending of her actually getting away with it.

I stopped with the third film. I hear a fifth one is on the way. 2 is OK. 3 is awful, but 4 is actually the best of the sequels IMO. Clever plot, lots of laughs and actually quite brutal in parts.

It's a very strong belated entry in the series. The meta thing works very well here and it's got an effective script with a nice mix of humour and genuine slahser-type horror. Far superior to the previous sequels and my favourite horror movie of 2011.

I was so put off by the third one that I never bothered with 4. People have told me it's a big improvement though, so maybe I'll give it shot one of these days.

10 years, eh? I still think it's the best one since the original.

I think of the 'Scream' trilogy as parts 1, 2 & 4 and I enjoy them all immensely.
I don't care for part 3 which Wes Craven directed under contractual obligation and used as a bargaining chip to make the passion project, 'Music Of The Heart'. Part 3 was scripted by Ehren Kruger so I was elated when Kevin Williamson returned to the fold for part 4.
