Right. Pick the right one, say the right name, pronounce exactly correct, or go straight to Hell. Do not pass "Go". Do not collect two hundred dollars.
Of course, that's what Jesus was sent to save us from. Since no one can pronounce his Earthly name, it's not a "name" thing. It's the Holy Ghost.

There are loads of gods. But there is only one God. Capitalization of the noun is everything, kids  . Still and all, maybe a TM should be inserted after the name just to ensure that everyone knows they are getting the one and only TRUE GOD Brand--accept no substitutes.

So if GOD created everything, then he must have created these lesser gods. What can these lesser gods do? Did one of them come to earth and have sex with Marlee Matlin's mother? And if GOD doesn't want us to worship these gods, why did HE create them in the first place.
This B.S. casts a huge shadow on this ancient book of short stories.

I think it meant no false 'human' gods but thats an interesting pov. Perhaps it could mean Hindu or alien gods too?

I contend that the Bible is an anthology of ancient folklore. Theists claim it's the word of GOD. When I point out any inconsistency, they claim I'm interpreting it incorrectly.

The typical Christian response I've heard is that 'god' means things other than the traditional 'super person.' They'll say people put other things first, ahead of God, and make THOSE THINGS their 'god.' EG, they'll say someone worships money or fame or power or yadda yadda yadda so THAT is the 'god' they put before Yeah Way.
I think at the time, they did believe in multiple gods and even held contests to see which 'god' was stronger.

Of course Elijah may have just been pwning them, knowing full well there was no 'god' Baal.

The Bible is ripe for cherry-picking by the cafeteria Christian. They have their own views of how the world ought to be, then find the scriptures to justify their POV. The RCC found justification for torturing heretics and witches and executing whole communities for refusing to recant and convert. Slave owners found justification for holding slaves while abolitionists found justification for opposing slavery. Folks find justification for wars while pacifists find justification for not fighting.
Heck...Mr Rogers has even come under scrutiny and criticism by...you guessed it...Fox news who misrepresented an LSU professor's comment about the problems with 'entitled' kids in the US today as being due to Mr Rogers.
They misrepresent this LSU professor's comments...refer to it as 'research' when it was a casual observation and the professor had zero qualifications TO evaluate the psychological or sociological of anyone. The prof was a economics professor. In fact the professor actually says...

But Fox and Friends had no problem presenting this stmt as 'research.'

Just goes to show that the human imagination is fertile and boundless in creating the fantasies of other, 'greater' beings. As a species we do have one honkingly huge inferiority complex, apparently (and maybe deservedly so in some respects). And actually, depending on one's interpretation of that passage, God (I just liked the color, kids, it doesn't signify anything) does not specifically state that one may not worship other gods. One just isn't allowed to place any of those other sundry deities on a higher pedestal. G., by his own admission, is a jealous guy and doesn't relish the notion of someone else being found more attractive than himself--just another area in which he displays a suspiciously close resemblance to the human ego.
