And that's just for the upcoming first season of it.

Amazon's Lord of the Rings Cost Nearly Half a Billion Dollars for Season 1
Season 1 of Amazon's Lord of the Rings series costs nearly half a billion dollars, which is even higher than the show's previous budget estimates.
"Season 1 of Amazon's Lords of the Rings series will cost nearly half a billion dollars to make, exceeding previous estimates for the expensive fantasy epic.
Stuart Nash, the New Zealand Minister for Economic Development and Tourism, confirmed Amazon is spending "about [NZ$650] million in season one alone," which is equivalent to $465 million in U.S. dollars. Per The Hollywood Reporter, that number was released as part of the New Zealand government’s Official Information Act, which also confirmed the studio plans to shoot as many as five seasons of the Lord of the Rings show in New Zealand, along with any potential spinoff series (should they come to pass).
Early projections for Amazon's Lord of the Rings series put the potential cost at $500 million for the show's first two seasons, including the $250 million the company spent on acquiring the rights to J.R.R. Tolkien's source material in 2017. However, it's believed the price tag rose even higher due to all the sets, costumes, and props that were created for Season 1, many of which are expected to be used throughout the series' run. For that reason, futures seasons are projected to be far less expensive to develop.
All the same, New Zealand publications are labeling the Lord of the Rings show a "significant fiscal risk," given there's no limit to how much the country's government and Amazon might end up spending on it. As such, the concern is that the New Zealand government -- which has already granted a $114 million tax rebate to the production -- will lose hundreds of millions of dollars, in the event the show isn't as successful as hoped for. At the same time, others argue the series is already benefitting the country through the production's local spending and could lead to similar perks down the line, like an increase in tourism."
The official synopsis for Amazon's Lord of the Rings series reads,
This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness. Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.
