It's my week off by request and I've been up through the nights and taking a 6 hour siesta around noon. But these early hours are when I get existential and worrisome about my future. It's not as bad as a few years ago but I feel malaised. I'm afraid of getting older alone and poor.

The old adage "nothing good happens after midnight". That of course is in the eye of the beholder.
I feel you, I get insomnia some nights and start thinking about crazy things.

I guess the quietness of night often lends itself to worrisome overthinking. Wayne Dryer would say we become what we visualize, so careful about inviting old/alone and poor into your life. He has lots of youtube stuff, or one of the many meditative music channels might help with calming; that's where I would start.

I've combated it from time-to-time, but I always end up back in te same routine, sooner or later. I live alone, I'm getting older, I've never been rich... and I'm still having the time of my life. We're all going to die at some point, so why not enjoy yourself while you can?

I quit cold turkey about... 7 years ago, but if I'm going to go before my time, I want a last smoke. Mind you, as I'd probably be pulling better than a ton going down the main drag to get to the servo in time to buy them, I think I'd already be enjoying myself.

Join the club.
Left to my own devices, my schedule runs from sunset to sunrise. If I go for more than a few days without needing to be up in the morning, it will always flip to that.

The correct answer is: No. You would not.

I'll try to remember that as I go flying down the main drag, pulling better than a ton straight past the local cop shop, to get to the servo in time to buy smokes, with my windows wound down, the stereo blaring and me laughing like a maniac...

As a teenager I would literally stay up all night, often relying on energy drinks and shots (5 Hour may have been a thing back then but the stores here didn't have them yet, I got some crappy tasting ones from Walmart's health section that didn't promise an actual timeline for how long you'd feel energized) to do it. These days I normally stay awake until 2-3 in the morning. I miss the old days when I could last all night, but I also know now that I'm older, and I drive, and 24 hours without sleep is the same as being legally intoxicated as far as impairment goes, I know it's not worth it.

I love getting up just after dark... knowing I have the rest of the night to look forward to. Especially the midnight till dawn period... I love being outside under strong moonlight, or the faint glow of predawn.

I love being outside under strong moonlight, or the faint glow of predawn. Yeah, I'm definitely a night person. I'm working mostly 3-11 now and it works for me. I don't mind working nights, but it got boring. Now I get off at 11:30 and have the night to myself

Get your degree and you'll be fine. Don't believe fools who tell you a degree is meaningless. Even a liberal arts degree will you get in the door most places. I've done hiring. I know.

My two cents: If you have options to preclude getting older alone and poor, utilize them before that happens. Staying busy also helps turn your worry into resolve.

I earned my degree 2 years ago. I thought maybe you might be going for a masters. But it's all up to you. What I said stands. With a bachelor's you've got what most companies want.
