From 2010-2019...
Best Picture Nominees 84th Academy Awards:
“The Artist” (2011) - Winner “Midnight in Paris” (2011) “The Help” (2011) “The Descendants” (2011) “Hugo” (2011) “Moneyball” (2011) “War Horse” (2011) “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” (2011) “The Tree of Life” (2011)
I believe as a collection, this was the best group of films nominated for “Best Picture” at the Oscars in the past decade.
Host: Billy Crystal
One of the last “classy” productions of the Oscars, before they started trying to make it “modern” and “cool”.

I remember enjoying that particular program. I probably liked the one hosted by Ellen DeGeneres the most. The vibe just seemed so laidback compared to future ceremonies.

I think that was the worst line-up of the decade. It's the only year without a single B.P. nominee that I loved. In fact, I thought some of those movies were downright bad.

Who even thinks about that movie anymore?

I didn't like Hugo at all. The only other film from that list that I have watched is The Help which I liked. But I think Billy Crystal as host is better than most.

So I’m guessing “no” then?

The Descendants is underrated. Lots of great performances in there. Moneyball is one of the best sports films of the past 10 years. Midnight in Paris is inspired Hugo is one of the best family fantasy films of the past 10 years. I agree, “The Artist” is pretentious, and the Academy was voting on Nostalgia for a time gone by, and “Extremely Loud” is just Hanks Oscar bait... but overall, I love this line up. What year would you say is best?

THE ARTIST - 7/10 THE DESCENDANTS - 8/10 EXTREMELY LOUD AND INCREDIBLY CLOSE - 3/10 THE HELP - 6/10 HUGO - 6/10 MIDNIGHT IN PARIS - 6/10 MONEYBALL - 4/10 THE TREE OF LIFE - 1/10 WAR HORSE - 5/10 What year would you say is best? Of the past decade? 2013 (when 12 YEARS A SLAVE won).

Also “Wolf of Wallstreet” Dallas Buyers Club was overrated. Matthew gave a great performance, in a mediocre film.

2011 might be my least favorite year for the Oscars tbh. Midnight in Paris is a bore, The Help is generic, Extremely Loud should have come nowhere near the Oscars and War Horse is Spielberg at his worst. I like the other nominees, but only The Tree of Life comes near greatness imo. Hugo would have been a good win too.
2019 is my favorite for the Best Picture line-up. A Joker movie, a Martin Scorsese gangster epic, a satire about Nazi Germany, a disturbing social class commentary, a famous literary work, a real-time WWI movie, a movie about the end of old Hollywood, the best racing movie ever made and one of the best relationship dramas of the decade.

I’ll be honest. Maybe the best.

Not for me. Only The Tree of Life, Moneyball and Hugo are even worthy of consideration, and I don’t think any of those makes my top ten of the year. The strongest recent year imo was last year, probably. I’d take out Jojo Rabbit and Ford v Ferrari for sure, but I can at least understand the candidacy of the others even if I wouldn’t personally nominate them all.

I was thoroughly enjoying it, but then it lost me when it brought in the pig and the manga girl. It just tipped into silliness.

That is when I really stopped enjoying it. Until that point it kept my interest to an extent. I actually dislike the animation style of the whole movie, so that is a big problem for me right from the start.
