Bear with me - this is going to be long.
I’ve gotten sucked into a series of murders (and one missing persons case) from the greater Baltimore area from 1969-1981. It’s all relatively young girls or women (the youngest being 13 and the oldest being 26). You are all most likely aware of the murder of Sister Cathy Cesnick that was featured in the Netflix documentary The Keeper’s. She is one of the murders I’ve looked into. Now I don’t think all these murders are connected but I think some of them could be. And some of them could involve the Catholic Church. Remember the Church was heavily involved with the police force in Baltimore at this time and very well may have been running interference or muddying things up.
I’m going to lay out the facts of the four murders I’m most interested in and then explain some possible connections. At the end I’ll go through three more murders and missing person cases that also have some similarities. I got most of this information by searching through all newspaper articles - there is painfully little available.
Anyway I hope you enjoy reading this. I’m sorry if it’s not the most well written - I’m just trying to get the key points out there. I am happy to answer any questions and I hope some of you will offer your own ideas/research/theories.
Sister Cathy Cesnick: Cathay Cesnick disappeared from Catonsville, MD on November 7, 1969. Cesnick was a teacher at Archbishop Keough High School in Baltimore but recently left to work in a public school. Cesnick’s body was discovered in a relatively remote area in Landsdowne, MD on Jan 3, 1970. She died from a blow to the head from a blunt instrument and due to the condition of her body, it was unknown if she was raped. The location of her body in Landsdowne was about a mile from the St. Clement Catholic Church.
Joyce Malecki: Joyce Malecki was a 20 year old living in Landsdowne, MD. On November 11, 1969 she disappeared after being last seen at the Harundale Mall in Glen Burnie, MD. Her body was found two days later on November 13th on Fort Meade (a military base south of Baltimore). She was found by a river running through the base in a relatively remote training area. Her hands were tied behind her back and her cause of death was either strangulation or drowning. Her throat had been stabbed but it was determined this was not the cause of death. I have seen mixed reports on whether she was sexually assaulted or not. I’ve seen some articles that say there were signs of sexual assault but this is not widely reported. It was also reported she was fully clothed and her clothing was not disturbed. Her car was found in the Boomtown section of Odenton, MD. It was parked by a telephone booth, the keys were in the ignition, the doors were unlocked and she had groceries in the backseat (14 Nov 1969 Evening Sub). She reportedly called a friend she was supposed to meet on Ft. Meade before disappearing so she may have been using this phone booth when she was abducted.
Grace (Gay) Montanye: Gay Montanye was a 16 year old junior who attended Franklin Sr. High School. She was a contestant in a local beauty pageant. On Monday Sept 27th 1971 her mother dropped her off at the schoolyard for a “rehearsal.” The rehearsal in question had actually been cancelled. Gayle had reportedly received a call from a “husky-voiced woman” offering her a modelling job (23 Oct 1971 Baltimore Sun). Montanye was not seen alive after this. Montanye’s body was found by Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Westport, Baltimore City on 29 Sept, 1971. Her head had been smashed by a cinderblock and her arms had evidence of cigarette burns. It was reported she was not sexually assaulted. Police looked into the phone call and found that Montanye’s photo had appeared in the Baltimore News American magazine. Police contacted two other girls who had appeared in this magazine and found they had received the same call from a husky-voiced woman. Both girls stated when they tried to meet up with the woman in Baltimore, she did not show.
Heather Ann Porter: Heather Ann Porter was 13 years old when she went missing from Lansdowne, MD on September 23, 1981 (yes, Landsdowne again). She had an argument with her parents and left the house that evening. She was not seen alive again and her body was discovered in Towson, MD the next morning. It is unknown exactly where she was abducted or how she got to Towson. Heather was reportedly a “difficult” child and attended Landsdowne Sr. High School until she was removed the prior year and sent to the Good Shepherd Center in Halethorpe, MD. This was a “reform” school run by the Catholic Sisters of the Good Shepherd for girls with behavioral or other issues. Her family lived right near St. Clement Catholic Church in Landsdowne, MD and attended this church. Heather was strangled and I am unsure if she was raped. Reports at the time say there was no evidence of sexual assault but I’ve seen that contradicted as well. I’m leaning towards not sexually assaulted given the initial releases.
Why could these be connected?
Two main reasons - location and the Catholic Church.
Many believe that Father Joseph Maskell was responsible for Sister Cathy’s death. He has been the subject of many sexual assault allegations - particularly while a counselor at Archbishop Keough Highschool. Here is Maskell’s timeline
Ordained in 1965
Served at the Sacred Heart of Mary in Baltimore from 1965-1966
Served at the St Clement Church in Landsdowne from 1966-1968 (he was the Malecki’s parishioner and personally knew the family. This was also the church Heather Ann Porter’s family attended although she would not have overlapped with him at this time).
Archbishop Keough High School Counselor from 1967-1975 (this was where he overlapped with Cathy Cesnick who reportedly knew of his abuse and may have been planning to go public with the information)
Division of Schools from 1975-1980
Annunciation from 1980-1982
Holy Cross from 1982-1992.
After this was he sent to Connecticut for “counseling” after receiving allegations of sexual assault. He did not serve in the Baltimore area again.
Father Magnus. Magnus has been the subject of many sexual assault allegations and reportedly assisted in covering up for Maskell during his time at Keough. Here is Magnus’s timeline
St. John’s from 1963 to 1969.
Archbishop Keough High School from 1969 to 1972
Mt. St. Joseph High School from 1972-1982
Towson Catholic High School from 1982-1984
Tribunal Office from 1984-1988 (at which time he died).
So here are the possible connections I see between the murders.
The first one has already been pointed out - Cesnick and Malecki and Maskell. Maskell knew both women and they disappeared within a few days of each other. Malecki lived about a mile from where Cesnick’s body was found.
The other two are a bit harder to link in but here are the facts:
Gay Montanye and her family were very religious and attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Glyndon which was a part of the Archdioceses of Baltimore. I have found two priests who served there that were accused of sexual assault: John Wiebelski from 1974-1978 and Robert Lochner from 1956-1958. The dates don’t line up perfectly with Montanye - Wiebelski served there after she died and Lochner only would have overlapped while she was very young. But regardless I think this demonstrates that church was part of the problem and I’m sure there were other priests who served there that have not been named or accused yet. Also it’s important to remember that priests don’t exclusively work at the churches they are listed to have served at. They interact with many other churches/areas and have people over to their homes. Basically, it’s a cesspool and the Montanye’s church was part of this cesspool.
The second interesting part is where Montanye’s body was found. It was found at Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Westport, Baltimore City. This is over 30 miles from her home. The cemetery is about 3 miles or a 10 minutes drive from Archbishop Keough High School where Maskell and Magnus were serving at this time. It is also about 2 miles/ a 7 minute drive from St. Clement Church in Lansdowne where Malecki lived and where Sister Cesnick’s body was found.
Now for Heather Ann Porter. Not only did the Porter’s attend St. Clement Church but she actually lived a block over from where the Malecki’s lived when Joyce went missing. Now it was over a decade after the other murders but the exact same area. And Porter was a student at the Good Shepherd Center. Only sisters are listed as having served here but it was closed in 2017 after being cited for poor supervision and sexual assault allegations, amongst other problems. And even though no priests are listed as having served there, I’m sure they were heavily involved with the school. A school run by the Catholic Church for young girls with behavioral issues? I can’t even fathom what went on here.
And even though Heather Ann Porter did not attend St. Clement while Maskell was listed as serving there, there was another priest who likely would have overlapped with Porter while she attended. Joseph Kenney served at St Clement from 1973-1987 and was the subject of sexual assault allegations. He was there about 3 years before Porter was murdered.
The biggest ? for Porter is where she was found - north of Baltimore up in Towson. How did she get there? Was she picked up in Lansdowne and taken there? Did she go somewhere and then ended up in Towson? Investigators don’t know. I doubt it’s connected but as a point of interest: Father Magnus ended up as the principal of Towson Catholic High School (about 2 miles from Porter’s body) in 1982 - the year after Porter’s murder.
So what does all this mean? Possibly nothing. There is so little information available - especially on Porter and Montanye. I scoured facebook and old newspaper clippings to gather the information I found. I think whether or not they were sexually assaulted could be an important fact. If they weren’t it seems more like they were “taken out” so to speak as opposed to this being a sexually motivated killing (by say a serial killer or sexual predator). Two were killed by blows to the head, two were strangled. Possibly none were sexually assaulted. All of them were involved with the Catholic Church and all of them had some connection to the area of Archbishop Keough High School and St Clement (Cesnick and Montanye’s bodies were found in that area. Malecki and Porter lived in that area).
I also wonder about the modeling call to Montanye. Occam’s Razor says this was who killed her. But my questions are - why wasn’t she raped? It seems like this kind of murder planning would include sexual assault. And two - could this have been set up by the Church? I don’t know. It doesn’t seem like something they would need to do, but you never know.
And even if it wasn't the Church it still seems like these murders could still be related. Which is why, in case this isn’t long enough, I want to mention 4 other incidents:
Pamela Lynn Conyers was a 16 year old from Glen Burnie, MD who was murdered on Oct 20, 1970. She went to the Harundale Mall in Glen Burnie to buy some dye and was not seen alive afterwards. The Harundale Mall - the same mall where Malecki was last seen. She was found dead in the woods in Pasadena, MD with her family car. She was raped and strangled. Conyers had moved to the area recently with her family from Hattiesburg, LA and her family were part of the local Methodist Church. No Catholic Church connection. She was also definitely raped. If anything, she could be related to the Malecki murder.
Francis “Danny” Crocetti. Danny was a 14 year old boy from Yale Heights, MD who went missing on March 24, 1975. His body was found in a stream behind Our Lady of Victory School on March 28, 1975. He had been stabbed repeatedly. His murder is unsolved. The main connection here is the Our Lady of Victory School. This was part of the Baltimore Archdioceses and in fact Maskell had served there from 1968-1970. Several other accused priests have served there over the years as well. The Crocetti family attended St. Joseph’s Monastery Church in Baltimore. That being said, I do not think this connected. Crocetti did not attend Our Lady of Victory School - he attended the local public school. His body was just found there. He was also stabbed and reportedly with an ice pick. This does not seem like a Catholic church MO and doesn’t fit with any of the other murders. Also - there is some, let’s call it, hearsay that Crocetti was murdered by some locals due to a drug deal. This is literally from a facebook thread so take everything with the biggest grain of salt but he may have been selling speed - that wasn’t actually speed. This led to his murder. It sounds like some locals and maybe even police have a good idea of who did it but there isn’t any definitive proof.
Woodlawn Jane Doe. Woodlawn Jane Doe’s body was found by Lorraine Park Cemetery in Woodlawn, MD on September 11, 1976. She was raped and strangled and her hands were bound. She was found with a grass seed bag labelled from Lexington, MA and a key that was created in Fitchburg, MA. This led investigators to theorize she was from the Massachusetts area. She has been listed as white, hispanic or mixed. She was also found with chlorpromazine in her stomach which is a medication used to treat schizophrenia. She was found about 3 miles/8 minutes from where Sister Cathy was last seen, 6 miles/10 minutes from Danny Crocetti’s body, about 10 miles/15 minutes from Gay Montanye’s body site and about 10 miles/13 minutes from St. Clement Church in Lansdowne. So in the same larger area, but not as close as the others. But the chlorpromazine made me wonder. The Catholic Church ran a lot of rehab centers or psych hospitals at the time. She could have been sent to one of them after being in the hospital for mental health issues - especially if she was transient in the area. I don’t know. I don’t think it’s connected but it’s the same area/time frame.
Lastly is Katherine O’Neill Anderson. Anderson lived in Chester, MD and was new to the area. On April 20, 1979 she took her car to a dealership in Annapolis and never returned home. Her car was found in Glen Burnie, MD (where both Conyers and Malecki were last seen) but she has not been seen since. Investigators determined the car had been driven 45 miles since leaving the dealership (I assume the dealership noted her mileage). Glen Burnie is not 45 miles from Annapolis and is the opposite direction of Chester, MD where she lived. I think this could be connected to Conyers. She was taken from Glen Burnie and they recovered her car - same as Conyers. Also new to the area although I doubt that matters. But without her body, it’s hard to know.
Anyway, I apologize for the insanely long post. As I said there is so little information available it’s very difficult to make any conclusions. Baltimore PD has said they’re looking into the murders but I haven’t heard anything since. I would love to see their case files on these and possibly talk to some family/friends of the murdered to get more information since there is so little available.
Does anyone have any thoughts on any of these? Do you think there could be a connection? Definitely not? Anyone from the area who could chime in? I live in MD, but not in this area.
