I'd have a tough call choosing between CHINATOWN or CARNAL KNOWLEDGE, but so many memorable movies and performances over 6 decades. The stunning run he had in the 70s/early 80s make me inclined to forgive a late flowering tendency to excess and he dialled it down very effectively in ABOUT SCHMIDT of the new millenial stuff. Whenever a greatest cinema performances thread comes round my standard GO TO's are Jack and Ann-Margret in the central section of CARNAL KNOWLEDGE.... the complete arc of a relationship charted hilariously and poignantly in one 40 minute sequence. Here they are near the beginning of the relationship and Jack is certainly paying his colleague a lot of attention....

I always think of Hazel Court's comment in an interview when discussing his stardom and how surprised she was. She said, "Little Jack Nicholson." That was her name for him.

Pick one favorite Nicholson role? Are you kidding? It's hard enough to even come up with a top 10.
If I had a gun to my head, I'd say Randall McMurphy.
But then there's Jake Gittes, Bobby Dupea, Jack Torrance, Melvin Udall, Warren Schmidt, George Hansen, Jimmy Hoffa, Frank Costello, etc.....

For a long time it was his take on the Joker. But now I lean more towards his performance as Nathan Jessup.

Very tough call. He is great in just about everything. I go with Jack Torrence. However, his best line is always...

Melvin Udall is maybe his most entertaining character, but I'll go with Jake Gittes.
