You know what. I am not that crazy about Oldman's performance either. I just feel his nomination is a tag on to the movie with a topic that Hollywood loves. Yes we like our Hollywood on Hollywood. I was bored to tears though - but i’ M no particular buff on subject. I imagine The sUNSET BLVD musical will lead the pack next year unless they really flub it. Assuming it still being made. I didn't know they are doing the Sunset Blvd musical. I hope Glenn Close will be starring it so she may finally win the Oscar. I saw the show back in the 90s when she was starring on stage. I loved it.

You do want to get your hands on FALLING timshelboy. Henricksen delivers a performance for the ages as the most profane and un PC character to hit the screen in the last year, but writer-director Mortensen treats him such sympathy. As for Hopkins, well I lost my mother a little while ago after her long, horrifying and heartbreaking battle with dementia. I came away from this film with a greater understanding of what I had seen and lived through first hand with my mother - I was left scorched. Hopkin's created a character that took me into my mother's world and illuminated things I had battled to understand at the time. To say my partner and I were moved at the end of this film is an understatement. SUPERNOVA - with Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci, is not in the league of THE FATHER, but it has the most beautiful ending of all the dementia movies currently doing the rounds. It's well worth a look too. Have spent the last 6 months locking down with my 88 yr old Dad - sounds like I need to see it. SUPERNOVA was on my "if it comes my way" list - bit of a Firth allergy generally but I'll give it a go I understand how you feel about Firth, and you certainly don't need to move heaven and earth to see SUPERNOVA. Track down FALLING, though Here's a curveball. Have you seen the 4-part doccie Allen vs Farrow?

It was in preproduction last time I checked and yes with Glenn - I caught it in London 5 yrs or so and yes - it and she were impressive - imaginatively staged and some good tunes - but I thought Norma was treated as a figure of fun towards the end... Swanson retained her dignity - The Norma I saw didn't. I'm kind of hoping she loses tonight in case it reduces her odds next year (or whenever) for that.

Minari is wonderful, entertaining and heartwarming. If Anthony Hopkins ( The Father) doesn't tear your heart out, you have no heart. This isn't the first movie about Alzhemier's, but (with Hopkins) it may be the best one. This film actually puts us into his position and invites us to see things as he sees them. You can see him constantly trying to bluff his disease and fit into the information coming to him others. I still haven't watched Minari. Sounds like a movie I will love.
I am getting a stronger feeling that Hopkins may win it. The diversity thing is the main reason I am keeping my pick for Boseman. I didn't see The Father. I love Boseman's performance though.

I did some checking, and Glenn Close will be Norma Desmond. Still in pre-production according to IMDb. Rob Ashford is the listed director. I don't know much about him, but I am excited about the movie. Hope it will come to fruition.

I kept hearing the same thing like you said that she is awful. I don't know how she got the nomination to begin with. The movie is available on Netflix. It is just not appealing for me to watch it at this time. Eventually though. Is the movie terrible too?

I had no idea - did she accept..?👿 I believe Sandra Bullock was a good enough sport to attend and give a speech when she won (ALL ABOUT STEVE I think) and I think Natalie accepted her Harvard Lampoon (?) for something. I have heard so much about The MINARI lady I think she’ll bag it. If MANK doesn’t win a thing will it beat the most noms no win record holder? Used to be TURNING POINT a I think.

Actually, sorry my mistake for left out a word. I mean, she got nominated but did not win. Maddie Ziegler beat her in the Razzie. The only other time I remember that someone got both Oscar & Razzie nomination for the same role was Amy Irving for Yentl.

And almost no one wants two old white people to win the big acting awards, but I wouldn't rule out either 83-year-old Anthony Hopkins (who will pick up a surprising amount of votes for his astonishing, career best performance in THE FATHER) and or the sublime Frances McDormand (who is in a category where Mulligan leads the charge, but where the vote will be split, which could, as it did Adrien Brody before her, benefit McDormand. Don't rule out Viola Davis (magnificent in MA RAINEY'S BLACK BOTTOM) either. It happened. Two old white people won.

It happened. Two old white people won. Actually, the wins for Anthony Hopkins and Frances McDormand adds them each to a special club: the 2 or more wins in leading roles. Who are the others in this position? Without using my computer, I can name 7 more. I who am I thinking of? Who have I forgotten? Immediately come to mind are
Meryl Streep Daniel Day-Lewis Jack Nicholson Katherine Hepburn

Meryl Streep Daniel Day-Lewis Jack Nicholson Katherine Hepburn Boy oh Boy, did I ever undercount on this one. There are 20 + performers in this category. And, Frances McDormand had already reached the 2 leading role wins before tonight.

Hillbilly Elegy is certainly worth seeing, but it shies away from the more controversial, insightful and honest parts of the acclaimed book it is based on - which is a must-read. So, while it has much to recommend it, Ron Howard's film version is a cop out seemingly fearful of offending a certain part of America's population. Which is not, however, to say it makes that aforementioned part of America's population look good. Because it doesn't. Watch it sometime. Amy Adams is very good in it, and Bo Hopkins has a strong supporting role.
