I would’ve said Mr Freeze, but this super grounded approach probably rules that out. I guess Court of Owls would be a good fit. Why do you guess? Because I haven’t read the source material. But based on what I know of that story it seems like it would fit this darker realistic approach.

The thing about the Batman movie franchise is it always did a good job of utilizing its rogues gallery in consequential order. Joker, Catwoman, Penguin, Riddler, Two Face, Poison Ivy, Mr Freeze, Bane, Ra's Al Ghul, Scarecrow, and now it seems to be repeating, Joker, Two Face, Bane, Riddler, Penguin, Catwoman and whoever else may pop up in The Batman. I guess the price of having such a good rogues gallery is that the casual fan (which is what I mostly consider myself) only want to see those most iconic characters. Everyone likes the idea of Black Mask, but we just see him in Birds of Prey. The rest of the more iconic characters are on the more unrealistic side, Man-Bat, Clayface, etc. or characters that are really just variations of Riddler, Joker.

I'd welcome more outlandish villains making an appearance. While I'm looking forward to the Pattinson film, it seems a missed opportunity to go into a more fantastical direction compared with the Nolan films.

I'd like to see it not be a trilogy.

I'd like to see Mr.Freeze, but only if they do his story where he is more of a reluctant villain but when Bruce/Batman helps him with his wife/research, he kind of calmly goes back to the asylum to just do his research, stare at his wife's form in her cryo-tube, and occasionally breaking out to make it a white Christmas/etc. because his wife liked snow on Christmas and the weather forecast had no snow the whole week of Christmas.
For full-on villains, I'd say Scarecrow, Hush, Court of Owls, or maybe a minor villain given a good makeover.

While I'm looking forward to the Pattinson film, it seems a missed opportunity to go into a more fantastical direction compared with the Nolan films. Maybe they could do something Nolen-esque in the sense that the real standout villain is held for the second film, rather than having one of your best villains right out of the gate? Rhaz & Scarecrow were interesting to have for Bruce's first outing, then Nolan's Joker is apparently insanely good (I've never watched the movie, but I've been a fan of Heath Ledger since before his 10 Things I Hate About You days, so I'm comfortable assuming he truly was phenomenal in the role), and the baddies of the third were kind of meh. Perhaps Riddler and Penguin will be the baddies for the first go-around, then in a sequel we'll get Mr.Freeze as a reluctant villain, Catwoman as her anti-hero self, and then Hush or someone like that for the true villain, and they manage to get away so they are able to come back in a third movie (or another Justice League attempt) to come at Bruce/Batman again along with some other villain as the B-plot villain.

Ok make of this what you will: He says there was footage left on the cutting room floor involving he and Paul Dano in a special location. "There were scenes we cut that I liked," Reeves explained. "In fact, there's a scene with the unseen prisoner (Keoghan), who appears at the end of the movie in Arkham [Asylum] with the Riddler. There was an earlier scene where Batman went to Arkham to try to profile the Riddler, and Barry is in that scene. It's a very cool scene, and I'm sure we'll we'll release the scene after the movie comes out, because it's a really cool deleted scene." "There's nothing that I took out of the movie that I wish was in it," Reeves continued. "This is the cut of the movie. I mean, there's no, it's not like there's some other [director's cut]. The amazing thing is I got to make the movie that I wanted to make, and that's this movie." comicbook.com/dc/news/the-batman-director-teases-deleted-scene-barry-keoghan-mystery-character/

A producer said the sequel will be released within the next five years.
So four and a half years then?

They gotta do the Joker. He's the ultimate batman villain. The question is when to do it. I wouldn't bring him in for the 2nd film. That'd be too close to mirroring The Dark Knight, which I don't believe anyone can mirror. I say bring the character in the 3rd or possibly 4th film.

I'd like to see it not be a trilogy. A quadrilogy then? If The Batman is a true success I could honestly see them doing 6 of them at least. Trilogy was kinda the older way of doing things. Now studios are always looking to expand out further than that. Robert Pattinson is fairly young. He could play this character over the course of the next 20 years. Superhero films are going nowhere soon. Rather than rebooting the franchise again after another trilogy I say just do what they can to keep this current iteration going. There's plenty of source material to draw from.

From what spoilers I read (assuming they're real) there is a plot point that could be a set-up for Hush appearing later down the line.

It’s been stated that Matt Reeves wants Mr. Freeze for the next movie, so I’m onboard with that. Just because this universe is supposed to be grounded doesn’t mean it can’t dabble in some of the more fantastical villains.

Yeah, I think by 'grounded' they mean that they just won't be campy like it's a Joel Schumacher movie.

The Batman tie-in website teases Hush as a potential future villain for the franchise, which is also teased in the actual film from Matt Reeves.

I definitely got the sense that this movie was acting as its own Hush adaptation, hence the shout out. It'd feel redundant if the actual Hush showed up.

After having watched the movie, I am having trouble picturing a villain like Mr. Freeze in this setting.
