Spoiler FREE assessment...it was good. The fight scenes were a highlight, the roster of characters is solid, it sets the framework up for anyone unfamiliar while also throwing small bones at MK fans left and right. I look forward to a sequel.
Spoiled conversations....
The fight scenes were mostly decent. The nods to character moves and finishers and things like that (even repetitive leg sweeps lol) were really good. Most of the character felt and looked like themselves from the games. However I will say that maybe the roster was a little too big for the movie to handle. We get almost nothing from almost any of the evil characters. Sub Zero is all over it and the main antagonist, and that works, but aside from some snarky talkback from Kabal the cast of villains felt bland. Visually on point but character wise, meh. Especially Goro, who should’ve felt like a boss and really didn’t. Again looked great, but lacking in the personality department. On the heroes side we get plenty of personality, even if a lot is cheesy it still does the trick. I liked seeing them all doing their thing and glad the movie didn’t shy away from the supernatural. Kung Lao looked cool, as did Jax with his arms...Liu Kang felt too soft tho and I wanted him to do the Bruce Lee sounds and he didn’t. Then there’s Kano. Kano is everything right about the movie. He’s meant to be tho so he’s given all the snarkiest lines and easily steals most of the scenes he’s in. Character wise he fits too. It was a good move not putting Johnny Cage and Kano in the same movie...their vibes would’ve been too similar here. Storyline wise...I dig it. It’s basically a prequel to the tournament...so if they do a sequel I’d assume it’d be the tourney proper. There’s no shortage of fighters to fill the ranks and they already kind of hinted at Noob so that could be cool. The focus on the Hanzo bloodline was ok for this one...Cole Young was ok I guess. He didn’t pop tho and I was kind of waiting for his transformation into a familiar character, which never happened...but he was fine.
Overall enjoyable for a fan of the games and older MK flicks.

Give the actor who played Kano the Oscar next year, you cowards.
Not a great movie, but imo infinitely more fun than Godzilla vs Kong. Just didn't need Cole. They kinda just gave him Baraka's blades?
Acting is a bit rough though.

Acting is a bit rough though. Coles blades seemed almost like nightsticks Stryker would use. His whole power set seemed based around taking a beating and redirecting it to offense. None of his story seems to jive with anyone in the game I can think of. I think they said he’s supposed to be original but I can’t help but look for clues as to who he may become in the future.

I think they cast Lewis Tan because of his good looks not because of any characters from the games.

A really, really bad film.
It's a movie for 8 year-olds -- in which about 200 F-bombs are dropped.

What I'm saying is that the script and dialog are pure "kids' movie" stuff -- but in an R-rated flick full of F-bombs and graphic deaths. It'd be like changing nothing about 1980's FLASH GORDON, only adding tits and graphic sex scenes... A complete mismatch of content and tone. It's just a painfully dumb film.

Didn't like it very much. I was expecting it to be better than 1995 movie and it ended up just being better than Annihilation. Personally Cole Young didn't work for me and I still don't undestand the point of his character. Plus it diminished the other characters from the game by defeating Goro and helping Sub Zero fighting Scorpion. Most of the fights weren't that good with significant cuts and were pretty much PG13 fights until we get the fatalities. I also felt that the CGI arms in Jax were a bit iffy. Kano was good and the scene with the leg swipe was pretty funny.

Huge downgrade over the original movie. Kano was a bright spark of charisma in a cast full of boring, bland, dull personalities. Subzero was great, they gave him a horror assasin vibe and his fight scenes where the best choreographed. Rest of the movie plain sucked. 4/10

It was a bad movie. Not terrible, but definitely not good. Kano and Sub-Zero were the only good characters. The first fight scene between Sub-Zero and Scorpion the only good scene.
The original movie is still better.

The original movie is still better. I still like the original movie, mainly cause it was the first MK movie and the fact that they didn’t need an original character for newcomers. It felt like a watered down MK though.

I keep seeing people saying “the story wasn’t very good”. If you were seeing Mortal Kombat for the story you weren’t seeing it for the right reasons. Yes the original movie had a better story, but don’t forget that by that time Mortal Kombat never had a deep story so the filmmakers had to try to think of a story that worked.
That’s like ordering a Pepsi and thinking you’re getting a coke. Let’s not act like MK had a deep story please.

Oh its a predator, alien, Rambo movie its just meant to be dumb fun. This isn't a new franchise. When the original movie, the animated cartoons and video games esp MK9 can all tell a coherent interesting story that pays respect to the characters then theres no excuse for a modern high budget (relative) production to be so meh at best. Dont bring this mentality to the MK movies, no one wants another Anhilation or a new [insert any modern day remake].

You should be seeing it for the fighting and fatalities and the characters. In my opinion all of that justice was done for. I wasn’t seeing Mortal Kombat for the story. I wanted to see it for the characters and fatalities. Story was the LAST THING on my mind. Also to compare this to Annihilation is just all kinds of WRONG!!! Honestly after that movie I didn’t think there was ever gonna be hope for a good MK movie ever again.

If you wanted to see characters doing fatalities with no context or reason, go watch a 2 hour fatality montage on youtube. The Mortal Kombat mythos is full of rich storytelling which deserved to be put on screen.

It felt like a watered down MK though. This movie had some better fight scenes, far better CGI and more gore than the first movie. I also liked that they can now use their powers. But that was about it. The original had better pacing, better character development, better acting, and far better story. The original also felt more like a Mortal Kombat movie whereas this feels more like, I don't know, a cross between Final Destination and Street Fighter? There's no tournament in this movie. No feel of them actually fighting one on one matches to decide the fate of Earth.
