Is this true?
I bought a box of cereal, and on the back, there are four "trivia" boxes of info. One of them reads this:
"In 1949, New Jersey passed a law making it illegal for drivers to fill their own tanks, citing safety concerns. After 70 years, this law still stands in New Jersey today. In fact, New Jersey is the only state where it is illegal everywhere and at any time of the day to pump your own gas."

Yes, it is. I got yelled at by an attendant one time because after waiting around ten minutes for him to take the nozzle out after my tank was filled, I got out of the car and did it myself.

Even though all the other states seem to have demonstrate that even the most simple-minded have managed to pump gas just fine, New Jersey still won't let their residents pump their own gas.... I remember back when they first introduced self-serve. Frankly, I hated it. I enjoyed the experience of pulling up, hearing the ding-ding after rolling over the tube, and the nice man in the white coveralls came out, and would clean the windshields and mirrors and lights, even check the oil and fill it up. That was service. There's even a few service stations like that up here that still provide that, complete with white coveralls and caps. It's like walking into an Andy Griffith show.

We had country stores and penny candy. It was such a culture shock to go into the city. I don't know if I mind pumping my gas re: weather because there's always a roof over the pumps. I just miss the experience because anything that reminds me of "vintage" experiences brings a smile to my face.

New Jersey isn't quite unique: Oregon has something akin...self-service allowed
in some Counties, forbidden in others. Most of the "attendant only" areas are
along/near the North/South corridor of Interstate 5.

That's a pretty stupid thing to have a law against, what's the reasoning? They're too stupid to figure out how to pull the trigger?

Wow, never knew this having lived in Florida all my life. I'll definitely take note if I ever drive through NJ again in the future.

Yeah, you are, and you prove it every time you have to resort to this because you can't form an actual argument. Of all the things you ain't, lawyer is definitely one of them, you'd fail even as a public defender.

It's pointless to attempt logical discourse with an idiot, you idiot. But I do derive enormous pleasure in pointing out that you are an idiot. Idiot.

That's a pretty stupid thing to have a law against, what's the reasoning? They're too stupid to figure out how to pull the trigger? I believe that a portion of the Oregonian argument for "attendant only refueling" was one of "Social Engineering": in an era/region of high recidivism, one determinitive was inability of former incarcerees to find/hold down a job. Enter the possibility of job opportunities which were 1) plentiful, 2) required no prior experience, 3) easily/quickly trained, 4) not likely considered as a long-term "career." These were also easily monitored by a parole officer (assuming that some parole program was in place), such that "return to society" assessment might be easier/quicker. It certainly got to the point of many/most motorists realizing "just who it MIGHT be that's refueling my vehicle." It's acceptable to have the attendant fill approved containers that you keep in the trunk; and motorcyclists were exempt from mandate of having an attendant do the refueling. And diesel refueling was exempt from the attendant requirement.

It's definitely true, but I never understood why. I would ask someone to explain it, but Pinky scares me.

Here is the law: www.nj.gov/labor/lsse/laws/Retail_Gasoline_Act_and_Regs.htmlIn short, it started out as a safety measure, was revisited for several decades, was found to be more profitable to retailers, but in the end, we like having our gas pumped for us.

Drivers forgetting to put the nozzle back and tearing the hose right from the pump as they drive off.
