All EPL and EFL clubs are having a four day social media blackout starting from 15.00 on Friday 30 April to 23.59 on Monday 3 May, to highlight continuing online racist abuse of players.
The FA, league bodies, and other football organisations will also be part of the blackout.
Thanks racists 😒 Huge penultimate game against promotion chasing rivals Tranmere Rovers next Saturday... Now where will I get all the matchday gossip 🤷♀️

I mean are there really a sizable number of meatheads who are suddenly going to no longer be racist because a Harry Kane or a Aston Villa Official account has stopped tweeting for a couple of days? 🤔 |

I mean are there really a sizable number of meatheads who are suddenly going to no longer be racist because a Harry Kane or a Aston Villa Official account has stopped tweeting for a couple of days? 🤔 It is more about pointing out to the social media companies the vast amount of traffic, and therefore revenue, that sport generates for them... They need them... Do something about online abuse on your platforms... Or we blackout again, for longer. The amount of social media traffic that just the Prem generates over any given weekend is phenomenal. |

Well, it's interesting given the context of my original post that you decided to make that assumption in the first place. Yet here we are... Anyway in terms of the social media pressure angle, do you think that Twitter say should really have any issues in stopping such content if they wished to? Maybe there's something around their business model which makes them reluctant. I remember there were some implications being discussed here in the UK when they decided they'd ban Trump. Something about it becoming a curated platform rather than neutral and therefore there were tax implications. I don't suppose a requirement on having racist comments fits that but then again I don't think they don't have AI algorithms available to stop these posts in the first place either, so who knows... |
