I just saw the trailer - it looks like it will be great. I was only 12 years old when I saw the original in 1961.

I hope this is good too. Spielberg remains my favorite director but some of his recent movies let me down. Ready Player One was alright but The BFG didn't feel like his style. Wasn't really a fan of either The Post or Bridge of Spies.

Wasn't really a fan of either The Post or Bridge of Spies. Ready Player One - Meh BFG - couldn't stand it! That and Tintin were the only Spielberg movies I could not get into or finish. The Post - not great, but not bad. Could've been more hard hitting. Bridge of Spies - Great! But not in an exciting way. More of a good solid drama. For me I still love Spielberg, but yeah, it kinda feels like he's slowing down. I wonder what he'll do after West Side story(?)

what a load of crap. jesus will this nonsense never stop?? the movie is not performing well because the story is outdated and has very little to offer to younger generations (like spielberg himself) musicals of this sort (serious ones) in general dont perform great and the trailer didnt really offer anything appealing other than pretty costumes, nostalgia and... Ansel

Ansel Yep. I don't even know who that person is, & it's the first I've read of this. Am I alone in that? No one I know is heading out for a f'n musical during a pandemic.

Saw this one. It's a pretty faithful adaptation of the stage play. Spielberg made some interesting changes, but I liked the changes made in the 1961 version more.
For example, both film versions change the circumstances/reasoning for the song "Cool". In the 1961 version, this change made sense (IMO) and was better than the way it was used in the play. In the 2021 version, it's co-opted to showcase the history of the gun used in the end of the movie. It's forced, odd, and just not as good.
They also oddly change some of the dialogue that, in the original (and the play), led up to the musical numbers. In some instances, it feels like the song just comes out of nowhere because the dialogue that led up to it is no longer there. I feel like the biggest offender on this front is "Something's Coming." The whole conversation between Riff and Tony is altered and completely ditches Tony telling Riff he feels like something big is coming. So the song just feels like it comes out of nowhere in this version.
One other advantage the original had was being filmed so close to the time the story is set. The city looks so artificial and staged in this version whereas it looked real in the original.
I still feel like it was a respectful adaptation. You can see the love Spielberg has for the material. That said, I still prefer the 1961 version overall.

The whole bridge number was actually my favorite scene in the film. I'd probably take the original overall for the performances (I think the only actors I liked better here were Riff's, probably Maria's, and Rita Moreno as the shopkeeper) and its whole Panavision epic feel. But this movie surprised me that I even had to think about it.

But this movie surprised me that I even had to think about it. Even with the actors I like better, the characters were killed by the writing or lack of chemistry. I liked the actor for Riff, but the writing killed the character. I get wanting to add a darker aspect to Riff, but they did it at the expense of his friendship with Tony and made Riff almost completely unlikeable. By the time of the rumble, it seems like the two are hardly friends. The actress for Maria was fine. But I did not buy her and Tony as being in love in the new one. The actors didn't have any onscreen chemistry. Say what you will about Richard Beymer and Natalie Wood in the original, they sold me as a couple in love. That's the most important thing for those two. Rita Moreno was fine, even if her addition was ultimately pointless. And having her sing the "Somewhere" song made no sense, and basically stole it from Maria and Tony.
