Maybe I'm the guy in the "becoming your parents" commercial.
I was starting to pick out some corn and noticed there was a corn peeled back and it had a huge area of black bad kernels.
I gave it to the woman putting out produce saying "I don't think you want to display this." She was all apologetic, but I just gave it to her to be helpful. Had she not been there, I'd have tossed it way back.
Similar thing happened at the meat. Turkey sausage package 2 weeks past date. Same response from the meat guy. I mainly don't want some other sucker buying it.
So am I the only one who does this? Or do people just either grab a different package or walk away because there was something eww there, everyone else be damned?

I usually leave the produce alone, the new produce manager's usually good to swap it out.
But the people at the register usually hear from me when the Pillsbury biscuits/crescents/cinnamon rolls/pizza dough start exploding and oozing down the shelves.

Catman takes a good look at whatever produce he buys to be on the safe side.

There's usually not a soul around when I'm looking at the non existent produce. I actually just complained about that. Otherwise I'll give some stink nose looks at the produce, so the "employees" who are standing around will notice & maybe....on their own, doing their job....they'll take a good look at the smushed, brown, too soft tomatoes I just walked away from.

The problem I have is in the meat department. I'll find a package that someone put their finger through the wrap.
I take it to the butcher.
The butcher takes it. I suppose they just rewrap it even though it has been contaminated.

Wish they had a box I could throw the nasty stuff into. Also will take "cold/frozen" products off the shelf if I find them and stick them somewhere cold/frozen. Also move cans around. I hate when people take something in their hand, move 4 steps down and put it back on the shelf. Like, seriously??? Don't forget, I worked in a grocery store for over 10 years. Can't break some habits. I also know how to bag food properly, not like the cashier I complained about who put the watermelon slice at the bottom and then the pack of potatoes on top. If I had wanted juice.... No, name's not Karen.

Grocery stores far and wide all invariably have food out that is past its sell-by date, has expired, and with produce you can surely find mold here and there. With the moldy fruit, usually what they do is cut around the moldy part and put the rest of it in a pre-cut fruit cup or something like that. With the expired meats and products, sure they'll take it and act apologetic but after you leave, they'll likely put it back. They don't all do that, but most of them do.

Sometimes I toss bad fruit back where no one can reach it. Or behind the display. Oops. Stores are known to replace labels on meat and fish to push the sell-by date back. USDA doesn't care.

I represent a handful of food and beverage manufacturers and distributors. The things they get away with, and the regulations (or lack thereof in a lot of areas) is.....eye opening. To say the least.

If you ever want to know just how much of the food we eat has rat poop particles (or other things) in it, just drop me a line.

It doesn't happen very often, but I'll take items that are "flawed," or won't sell to the checkout stand. I do it as a courtesy. Sometimes I get an apology, sometimes a "thank you."
I always check eggs in the carton. A few weeks ago, I found a carton that had two that were cracked.

They may look fine on top, but are cracked at the bottom. Not anyone's fault really...
