It'd sure save you from winding up in this position.

I memorized the map of the U.S. when I was 5. I also knew every country on the globe. It's not useless.
I can't tell you how much I lose respect for a person when they think Chicago is in Missouri. One guy I know said Paris is the capital of London. Lol.
It's about knowing the dirt beneath your feet.

I often get shocked how bad many people are at geography.

I used Sporcle.com to memorize the states of Mexico and the counties of England on a map a few years ago.

So you’d make a good offline GPS system?

So you’d make a good offline GPS system? I honestly don't think anybody's stooopid enough to rely on GPS to figure out which state they're in. But then again, in today's world, you never know.

But you got one on me! I still don't know Surrey from Kent.

I once gave a ride in the US to a guy who was a college student and whose knowledge of American geography was significantly inferior to mine – and I am not even American. I was astonished. I remember that he thought Philadelphia was a state!

I think all 5th grade teachers should do this. Tell their students they have one week to study a map of the United States and they will have a test on it. After a week the teacher should cover up any maps in the room. On the test there should be the names of three states. The question for the students should be name the states that border these states. Those that passed would have no more tests given to them on that subject. Those that failed the test would be given another test after several days went by. Then give them another test but name three different states. Keep doing that until all students passed.

Catman can still hand draw a US map with all the states in the right places.

It'd sure save you from winding up in this position. That'll make you feel smart. I use a can opener regularly and used it to open a can of tuna just last year.

I still can’t find Connecticut. I’m not sure it really exists. It's the little rectangle next to NYC.
