I work with troubled kids, and they were sitting in a room working on an assignment.
One or them walked up to me while I was on my laptop. He has a FLAT affect, so you never know what emotions he is feeling.
So, he casually walks up to me. Blank look on his face and says “Hey, I want to show you something.” He reaches behind his back and pulls something out quickly and points it at me.
For a split second, I thought he pulled a gun or a weapon. It was his cell phone. He showed me a meme. He just wanted to make me laugh. It turned out okay.
But for that moment I wasn’t sure, I wasn’t scared. I didn’t flinch, I didn’t panic. I was just going to let it happen. I didn’t react at all.

Could also be that you've grown to really know and trust the kids you work with, and that despite their troubles, you know what their capabilities are, and know their spirit.

They just had 6 people quit on our pediatric psych unit. It's a whole other world from working with adults.

I don't know else what you could have done. If he had a gun, he had a gun. Though I have worked with special needs' kids before and most of them aren't hard wired for violence.

When faced with what we fear is an unspeakable act, we sometimes go to a certain place in our head where we feel nothing and live in exactly that moment.

I don't fear death if it is just non-existence. I believe it is, but I don't know for sure obviously.
I suffer from clinical depression and generally find life frustrating, annoying, boring and meaningless so I am just waiting around to die basically.

I was a very violent child and still struggle with violent thoughts.

Natural survival instinct would have kicked in if it were me. I wouldn't have had time to even think about it, I would have just reacted. My comparison would be when I was rear ended by a semi and it pushed into the other lanes of traffic on the highway and i thought I was going to die and I was okay with it. In that case there is nothing you can react to. The breaks didn't do anything, so I just had to accept the situation. I was very lucky. Every car somehow avoided hitting me. I just had a back and neck ache for the next couple days from the impact.

Like “what’s the point” Not that I want to die, but it’s just the idea that “what are we building up to”?

I was actually feeling especially suicidal this morning. I am over it for the moment though.

I go through phases of suicidal thoughts l, but now I’m vegan and trying to eat a healthy lifestyle with exercise. One extreme to the next.

Your split reaction was a completely normal reaction that anybody would have.
Your reaction may have been a split second of self doubt and a natural instinct. You're doing a good thing that isn't an easy thing to do.
Keep doing what you're doing.
