A-Sometimes it's a B+, tonight was an A-. +- Probably one of the best purely American movies if you will. Characters, place & setting, romance, action, fights, etc. Many WWII films of its era would shoehorn in aspects like slapstick, throwaway romances, &/or gratuitous violence - this 2hr movie sticks to strong dialogue & characterizations. - Everyone's performance is legit entertaining & pretty engaging. -- With all its emotional build towards Pearl Harbor, the ending kinda lands a bit flat, & rather swiftly. There's next to no personal reaction, let alone reflection, to the attack from any of all the characters we'd met & got to know. Death spoilers: Sinatra's character doesn't live to the 7th, Swift's character barely makes it through the day by friendly fire, & yet the film doesn't reflect about that with the war & whatnot.

In addition to a wonderful story and many fine performances, the film is an interesting look at the pre-war army.

FROM HERE TO ETERNITY's biggest asset is its group of main characters... but it's also its biggest flaw You see, they're complex people with interesting stories that give their respective actors the chance to give good performances. Unfortunately, the movie should've focused on just one of them, because the way it shifts from one to the other and the way it doesn't settle on a specific tone ruins the pacing. The scene where 2 of them (WARDEN & KAREN) kiss at the beach remains a very passionate scene to this day, but I don't consider it to be the most memorable moment in the movie (like most people do). It's followed by a very serious conversation, which ruins the mood (once again, tone issues). KAREN's monologue during that scene, PREWITT's drunken rants and everything that happens from the Pearl Harbor attack to the end felt more memorable to me. 5/10 ------------------------------------- You can read comments of other movies in my blog.

In addition to a wonderful story and many fine performances, the film is an interesting look at the pre-war army. Yeah. I always used to believe it was an armed forces love fest. I see the Army did not approve its content at all, & the Navy followed suit in support of them. While the hooliganism stuff by the characters was for entertainment purposes, I guess the armed forces thought the bullying went too far. The forced retirement scene was demanded from them, & the director hated it.
