This is a perfect example of a film that should be remade. Great concept for a superhero film, Neeson is great and Elfman’s score is amazing but the tone is wildly inconsistent and the special effects are awful. If Raimi had made this later in his career it could have Been a real classic

'Darkman' - This is a perfect example of a film that should not be remade. Liam Neeson was suspiciously great for a change and Danny Elfman’s score was amazing, enabling the wildly consistent tone and dazzling practical effects to fly. If some comic book for hire studio hack now makes this, it'll be a real classic for people who call people "'tards".

As long as the scene at the carnival where he tries to win a plush elephant becomes a prolonged 45 minute ear-and-eye-crushing spectacle, I'm in.

I completely disagree.
I don't think the tone of the movie is inconsistent. The effects are dated, but that isn't a big deal in this case.

I couldn't get into it. The characters didn't interest me and the setting, for whatever reason, felt a little drab.

I completely disagree. The stuff you are complaining about adds to the charm of the movie. I don't know if I'd agree. Darkman was rough around the edges and seemed to have eyes larger than its stomach. It felt off. I guess you could call that charm but I'd call it a little sloppy. Even for Raimi.

I actually edited my reply. I re-watched the movie 2 years ago and really enjoy it.

It's more the structure of the film. It's been awhile since I've seen it, admittedly, but even for a Raimi film it felt tonally weird and half-baked. Like it needed a rewrite or two and some more substance. There's some good stuff in it but I always got the impression it wasn't quite done and maybe a remake would not be the worst thing.

A remake would take away from the reasons I even care about the movie existing in the first place. Liam Neeson, the cheesiness, the style and the score. The script isn't anything special, but it isn't intended to be. I believe the weird tone was intentional and works to the movie's advantage.

Looks like the movie was horribly butchered in the editing room and Raimi wasn’t exactly 100% pleased with the final version

I might be okay with a remake if I actually thought a remake would improve on the original, but most remakes are just lazy cash grabs.

Evil Dead 2 was more or less a remake of the first Evil Dead. Just improved and expanded upon. What would you say if Raimi was involved in the process?

No.
The movie's fine and doesn't need to be updated in any way. And also, they'd surely find a way to fuck it up.

Let's consider my points one by one. One, I try not to let my anger get the best of me. Two, I don't always succeed. Three, I have seven more points.
As a movie-it has a great opening--Larry Drake is good, and that asshole real estate guy. I liked the henchmen and some of the scenes--like the aerial stuff with the helicopter. The fact that he developed rapid prototype 3d technology that seemed far-fetched then but not anymore!
But Frances McDormand was miscast with a capital M. She was friends of the Raimis.
"I know he likes Ricky."
As for Liam Neeson, he's undercut by the comedy aimed at his character. One is supposed to laugh at Darkman-that he has to wear glasses and a cat hisses at him--you end up not really sympathizing with him as much as one could.

I disagree about Evil Dead 2 and Sam Raimi would back me up according to Bruce Campbell. The first 20 minutes or so is a recap, the rest is a sequel. That is how it was intended. Make a remake. I don't care, it is just unnecessary to me. The difference here is that I seem to like the original more than you, so it makes sense why you would be interested in a remake. I don't have much confidence in Sam Raimi anymore. He hasn't made a good movie since Spider-Man 2. I am not a fan of Drag Me to Hell, which coincidentally is a case of a good concept that isn't done very well imo. That movie is a tone mess.

Great smell. Looks like Clive Trevorrow is interested in doing your remake. I thought it was Colin? It is. The user who called him Clive made what you would call in some circles, a mistake. Thank me later.
