The umpiring has been atrocious thus far. In the Mets-Phillies game last night, in a single play, the second base umpire ridiculously ruled that Andrew McCutchen ran out of the baseline (when he clearly didn't, and that's not a reviewable call for....reasons), and on the same play, Matt Joyce was called safe at first base after clearly getting thrown out by a step. That second call was at least overturned on replay, but what the hell. I get it, mistakes happen, they're only human, blah blah, but what are you watching? See for yourself, even the Mets announcers properly pointed out how asinine it was. www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/phillies-joe-girardi-blasts-terrible-judgement-call-that-was-not-reviewable-in-one-run-loss-vs-mets/

Jose Navas has quickly become the worst umpire in MLB. As bad as the McCutchen call was last night, Navas is even worse behind the plate.

ROBOT UMPS! ROBOT UMPS! ROBOT UMPS! you understand with a 'robot ump' you'll have someone setting up the strikezone off the field with ZERO oversight, right?

And as long as it's consistent, would that be a problem? there's no way to know if it's consistent. if you watch the home & away tv feeds on mlb network, you'll see the electronic zone isn't the same on each broadcast.

Is this your guesstimation, or has there been a test that has happened that I'm unaware of?

It continued on Sunday. Buster Posey clearly caught the foul ball but they ruled that he "trapped it".
The Rangers catcher caught the foul ball then went to throw back to the pitcher and dropped it. They ruled he never had control.
The worst part with a lot of these calls is that the umps huddle and not one of them saw what happened so the call stands.

This argument continues to make no sense because the zone is set and won't stray from pitch to pitch like it does with a bunch of the umpires, which is the real problem with balls and strikes. You want to have a shitty zone and squeeze pitchers? Fine. You want to call identical pitches differently? Not fine.

You want to have a shitty zone and squeeze pitchers? Fine. You want to call identical pitches differently? Not fine. Every umpire is a different size and takes a different position behind the plate depending what side the batter is on. There was also a study done a few years ago regarding the accuracy of umps and their years of service. If I remember correctly the newer umps had a higher accuracy rate. Also seems that every couple years they "make a vow" at the beginning of the season that they'll be calling strikes accurately. Like calling the lower strikes one year then the higher ones the following year. Like most things this rarely continues the entire season and is completely different with each ump.
