Even a defeat against Wolves today would not be enough to consign Wets [sic haha] Brom to the second flight. But they've got a decent chance of turning over a Wolves side which was a shambles last time out in the 0-4 molestation by Burnley, including that 15th-29th minute hat-trick potted by Chris Wood.
Allardyce is a quarter of the way into a 2 year contract which would see him take charge in the Championship although there is the ever-present trigger clause which could see him expelled by the club at anytime. "The only way to get me out is to sack me," he said recently. With that million pound survival bonus unlikely, early termination of his contract would not be a financially unwelcome outcome for him and at aged 66 and with a managerial win rate of precisely 39% over his 13 stints - high, 100% for England : one game, one win; low, 19% for West Brom over 21 games so far - he's got limited options in the way of good earners.
As for Wolves, there was gossip that Raul Jiminez would make a surprise and very welcome return for this derby but in reality he needs more time, although the news from the physio room last week was good : "He's almost ready to go. We still have the main issue, the bone, we need to respect that. That's why we don't allow him to head the ball, he trains with his protection."
Defeat for Albion (1/500 for the drop) would be the final straw, surely, if there was any lingering hope in the backs of their faithful fans' minds. With Arsenal, Liverpool, West Ham and Leeds to come it's one miracle that Samuel could not perform.

26 minutes in, no score.

It's fast approaching half time. The first person convicted of speeding was going at 8mph, four times the speed limit of the day, caught in his Benz horseless carriage after a 5 mile pursuit by a cop on a bicycle and was fined the outrageous sum of four pounds and seven shillings in Kent, England, in 1896. The speeding fine was ten shillings, plus a separate fine under the Red Flag Act (it was illegal not to have a man with a red flag walking in front of your vehicle as it moved) plus court costs. To be fair, though, for all the unbearable dullness contributed to this game by Albion, Wolves had had five chances on target. Let's hope it's a matter of time before we see a change in the scoreline. Nothing-nothing.

And there it is, Doc, at last. Goal-starved expensive signing Fabio Silva has potted on the stroke of half time! In fact, it was the last kick of the half. We're lifting off. No more random ye olde facts from me.

That goal will do Silva's confidence no harm at all. Semoda set him up for it and, with the defender challenging, it kind of bounced back off his own leg after he struck it and it beat keeper Johnstone for 0-1 Wolves.

Ref Tierney has cried off for the second half and is replaced by 4th official Mike "I'm a celebrity, get me in here" Dean.

Albion is threatening to equalize here. Wolves had better watch those little build-ups outside their area.

Right on time, there's the leveller. Wolves had been asking for it. What is it about coming out a goal up and allowing a hitherto impotent opposition to come at you with discovered energy and threat? Diagne on '62 heads it in from Townsend's cross and leaves the Wolves defenders standing.

The subs have been coming and going like Billy-O. Anything to give us a goal in the remaining minutes.

It's finished one-all, neither here nor there. That was indeed the Final Conflict for Big Samuel, surely. Ten points off Newcastle and Burnley, four games left, abominable goal difference. Ding Dong the witch is gone, on a night of heavy rain lashing down like a tempest on his godforsaken yet defiant bulk.
