It may be known mainly for the absolutely awful CGI Scorpion King effects near the end (and some really bad CGI in general, heard this was because ILM was more focused on Pearl Harbor and Attack of the Clones), but that is selling the movie short. This is a super fun sequel and action adventure film. The action is nonstop and relentless. Fraser and Weisz still have great chemistry and Weisz's Evey goes has a bit of a Sarah Connor transformation from the first movie to this one. The new son character also is surprisingly charming and clever instead of being an annoying moppet. Alan Silvestri delivers an epic score that is just as good as Jerry Goldsmith's work in the first movie. The first two Mummy films are honestly what Indiana Jones 4 should have been. I still hold out hope for another installment reuniting Fraser, Weisz, and the rest of the gang
also known for being the Dwayne Johnson/The Rock's first movie

I enjoy it a lot. It’s a fun sequel. I’m a little bit forgiving about the special effects mainly because the design of the Anubis Warriors and even the Scorpion King at least look cool. And if we’re being honest they kind of fit the vibe of the movie.

I like it, both first two Mummy film are easily better than Crystal Skull. The CGI scorpion/Dwayne Johnson thing was pretty bad though. It was a huge letdown since I was a pretty big wrestling fan at the time, I thought the Rock was gonna do some wrestling moves rather than look like an awful PS2 game character.

I have seen it but forgotten most of it, which means it is forgettable. The only scenes I remember are the ones with The Rock in them.
The Scorpion King is much better at trashy entertainment. It is more aware and accepting of its B-movie roots. Chuck Russell always knew a lot more about entertaining filmmaking than Stephen Sommers.

I remember there was a lot of controversy because they had shown the trailer before How The Grinch Stole Christmas and it terrified some kids. I think the Whos were scarier than anything in The Mummy Returns though.

I didn't like it. It simply lacked charm of the first one. I thought the Alex character was really annoying and the story basically felt like a rehash of the first one.
And of course, one of the worst CGI of a big budget movie.
I only enjoyed the first Mummy movie of the franchise. The rest were disappointing.

Agreed, they never quite recaptured the magic of the first one. The others weren't terrible, they just made me think I should've rewatched the first one instead.

I was exhausted by the fx when I first saw it-I felt it was waaay overkill--the army of Anubis does nothing--they all disappear and there's no bodies. And the oasis disappearing. It is a cool effect but exhausting visually--when you first see it.
On the other hand after watching it a couple of times, while I still prefer the first one, I liked it enough. I think Sommers directs actors well--the kid is not annoying even though he is supposed to be annoying. He's nowhere near as bad as a Spielberg movie kid.
I felt Weisz was better in the first movie--she looked different and I preferred her personality in the first movie. The reincarnated princess--give it a rest.
Brendan Fraser has some good comedy moments like when Oded Fehr sees the tattoo and gives him a secret password code-he countered Fehr's totally serious approach with that comical incredulous tone-also his pilot friend. "You're gonna get shot."
This does have some really bad cgi--the Scorpion King's face, and the scene where Arnold Vosloo regenerates in the train car--that is the worst cgi I have seen in a big budget movie--that closeup of his face--why??? But the concept of the Scorpion King was cool--I liked the opening scene best with the narration and the little peplum story in the desert--the music was good too--I just think they ruined it with that awful cgi.
Sommers has the worst attitude to cgi--he just loads the movie with it. He doesn't care if it looks like a video game.

Your comment is ridiculous what else were you expecting the (scorpion king) to look like exactly? You thought Dwayne Johnson was going to come out dressed in a superhero crab costume or something?

Wow your mother had graphic sex with Dwayne Johnson that's why you're eager to see him dressed as scorpion boy. That's right insult an innocent woman who doesn't know you exist, twat. You said something braindead live with it instead of insulting a user's entire family tree.

Crappy cgi...even back then. The first Mummy was better looking.
But yea I remember being super excited to see The Rock in a movie. His role was kind of disappointing but at the time nobody knew if he had any acting chops or not.

I liked it but it lacked the charm of the first one. The first film captured the feel of the time period it was set in, but the second one blows that away with the stupid pirate ship blimp. Why couldn't they have just used a CGI blimp that would have existed during the period? I guess with CGI pygmy cannibals (or whatever they were) and a half man half scorpion you are already in a fantasy world but I like it when at least the rest of the world still seems "real." The first one had that with the boat ride down the Nile, the cars, and the fairly period correct biplane.

The CGI is the biggest problem, but it's still a pretty fun follow up overall.

Not quite as good as the first but an entertaining enough sequel nonetheless. Funny how they advertised The Rock being in it but he barely shows up and even in the climax it's just a CGI model of him.

Leonard Maltin Movie Guide Review:
The Mummy Returns (2001) - 1.5 out of 4 stars
"Frasier and wife Weisz (with a precocious son in tow) desecrate an ancient crypt and Inadvertently discover the means to raise an ancient army from the dead. Big Dumb Sequel to the original Big Dumb Hit has all the same ingredients (plus skeletal pygmy warriors!). A long, noisy action-adventure film made up entirely of climaxes. Followed by THE SCORPION KING and an animated TV series. Panavision."
