Especially the really popular movies/actors
Robert De Niro tried out for the role of Sonny in "The Godfather". I'm glad James Caan was selected. Good for De Niro, too, who got to play Vito Corleone in the flashback scenes in The Godfather: Part II

To be fair to Tom. He did get the part, but he couldn’t film due to scheduling conflicts with Magnum P.I. So it went to their second choice, Harrison Ford.

Tom Selleck would have been a great Jones, he sort of made up for it in High Road to China. I'm glad Ford got the part, but if history had been different and we never got Ford, I imagine we'd still look fondly on the series.
That Russell test for Han Solo is interesting, I never saw that one before. I imagine with some fine tuning he'd have done a good job, he's always been great in everything he's done. I imagine it would have been an interesting twist since in '76 or '77 he'd have mainly just been known for his Disney roles.

Wish we had footage of this one, but the Patton Oswalt bit will do I guess:

Good for De Niro, too, who got to play Vito Corleone in the flashback scenes in The Godfather: Part II I can't imagine anyone else in the role of young Vito so it did work out well for him in the end, but if I'm honest, I think De Niro would have been perfect as Sonny. He brought such a physical energy to his earlier roles, always with that undercurrent of danger and violence lurking beneath the surface which pretty much summed up the character of Sonny Corleone. I have to admit whenever I see that clip, I always get a slight tinge of regret they never went with him even as good as Caan was in the role.

De Niro's brand of danger and violence was more the unhinged psycho. Sonny's is a macho bravado that Caan was more suited for, or "big dick energy" as the kids say. I can't even picture De Niro's Sonny ripping on his little brothers without it feeling sinister.

Caan was closer to the book's depiction. DeNiro was very slight of build in those days.
There's a book of casting choices that were considered--Robert Redford was considered for Michael Corleone and Danny Thomas for Vito Corleone.
