Yesterday, May 6, our beloved Willie Mays turned 90. And we all collectively failed to wish him a happy birthday. After last year's HOF caliber lineup of deceased MLB players, we need to count our lucky stars that Mays is still around. Happy Birthday Kid.
Naturally, looking at today's birthdays across MLB history, we get to celebrate such luminaries as James Loney, Keon Broxton and Brook Fordyce. Of the 37 MLB players born today (according to bbref, I have no idea if this number is correct), there has been a grand total of 1 All-Star Game appearance among them. In 1966, Houston Astro Claude Raymond made the midsummer classic. In the spirit of this paragraph, he didn't make it into the game.

Happy belated birthday to the game’s greatest living player and top 5 all-timer.
Also, until this post I had never heard of Claude Raymond.

Great player Not so great a person Is he a bad nonce or something? From what I've read, he can be a surly prick
I've known a couple people in the memorabilia business who can back it up. One seen Mays at a show. A customer had a Mays baseball card he paid to have autographed, a pretty pricey one. The guy was wearing a Dodgers jersey. The Say Hey Kid made a couple comments, signed the card and then ripped it. Just because the guy was a Dodgers fan and didn't suck his left toe.

It’s inexcusable but I think those rivalries meant more back during Mays’ years. Dodgers Giants Yankees were like the Crips, Bloods and Latin Kings then.

It was obvious that Mays didn't want to be there, according to my friend. So don't do shows. Plenty of athletes will not sign under any circumstances. Tiger Woods, Brett Favre, Chipper Jones, Barry Bonds.
The Dodgers-Giants rivalry must have been amazing when they were both in NYC. I wonder what it would be like today if neither moved. Even more intense? A bit bloodier?
