He achieved quite a feat in 1959, a number one hit on the US Billboard for 4 weeks. Only 3 songs occupied top spot for longer that year - Mack The Knife, Venus and The Battle Of New Orleans. The story of Lee Shelton or Stagger Lee/Stack-a-Lee/Stagolee/etc is perhaps nowhere more riotously and joyously performed than here, and there have been many interpretations as you may well know, from Grateful Dead to Nick Cave to Bill Haley. What a truly sensational sound this is :
