He also had a thing for Alex Proyas, even rewarding Knowing with a very good review.

I did like TR2 better than the first one. Not sure what he was thinking with the other two though. Yet he didn't really rave about Twister all that much.

I miss Roger Ebert. But I like going back through his archive to read reviews, interviews and opinion pieces.

I think Siskel and Ebert were bribed for their "Two Thumbs Up" review for Speed 2.
If just Roger Ebert rated it Thumbs Up I wouldn't think it was suspicious, but it was very out of character for Siskel.
I actually didn't mind Speed 2 when I watched it on original release when I was 14, but I re-watched it a couple years ago and didn't even finish it. It is terrible.

Good for him. Paul Verhoeven's departure was the final nail in the Hollywood action coffin, the end of a generation. Verhoeven had had enough of being ridiculed and returned home to Netherlands where he's continued to make interesting movies.
Who today can step in for the action maestros of yesteryear?

Gareth Evans if they gave him a big enough budget. I did like most of what I've seen from those guys that directed John Wick.

I don't want to say it was the first time ever I watched a movie based solely on a positive review. But my choice to watch that movie, and waste two hours of my life (in separate viewings), I blame it on the blurb on the VHS tape.

I don't agree with ebert. Also, his citizen kane commentary sucked. But his dark city commentary was alright.

He gave thumbs up to Speed 2, The Haunting, and Tomb Raider 2 He didnβt like Clifford!π. www.rogerebert.com/reviews/clifford-1994To return to the underlying causes for the movie's failure: What we have here is a suitable case for deep cinematic analysis. I'd love to hear a symposium of veteran producers, marketing guys and exhibitors discuss this film. It's not bad in any usual way. It's bad in a new way all its own. There is something extraterrestrial about it, as if it's based on the sense of humor of an alien race with a completely different relationship to the physical universe. The movie is so odd, it's almost worth seeing just because we'll never see anything like it again. I hope.

A review like the Ebert one I posted for Clifford almost feels like a badge of honor for it.

What's the point of critics anyways?
Watch what you feel like watching. Movies are subjective and you like what you like.
