So, we ate out yesterday, and our waiter was a mid-height, young, stocky young man with black hair who wore black-rimmed glasses and a black face mask. After we finished our appetizers, I noticed my drink was almost finished, and at that moment turned to a young man who was clearing some stuff from our table and asked for another drink, advising him what it was. He looked at me with wide eyes and said "I'll get your waiter." Upon further inspection, I realized this was not our waiter, but the busboy - who was built and looked very similar to our waiter - except he wasn't wearing glasses and had on a blue mask! Guess you had to be there. I laughed my ass off.

When I was a waitress I bussed tables as well. It depends on the restaurant. Here there was clearly a pecking order. Poor busboy!

In California the waiter is usually white and the busboy is usually Mexican. So it's harder to make that mistake. Just sayin'.

It's a mixed bag here, and you mostly never can tell - except in really high-end snooty restaurants. Then, you have high-toned snooty white waiters (no females), and the bussing staff are usually Hispanic. Sometimes you get a young white guy bussing, but that's rare.

Well I wanted to keep it simple but I'll qualify it. The waiter here could also be Asian or a Latina female. But the busboys here always look like busboys and are Latino guys and I can't see confusing them with a waiter. Just sayin'.

I remember on the show Any Day Now, Annie Potts' character mistook a black customer wearing a similar outfit as their server for their waitress and it had to get blown up into a whole 2 parter racist issue. Like get a life, lady, I've been mistaken for employees in several places I frequent. And if I thought I could get away with it, I'd go along with it.
