told his mom in Russian at Orthodox Easter dinner when she asked me what religion I follow and I answered "atheism." Hope that's not disappointing! Most Chinese are non-religious.

There's no point in arguing with an old Orthodox woman about god. Now the in-laws think you're a heathen. You should have just been more ifsy as if you had no strong beliefs.

Definitely a touchy subject for some. My take on it is: Whatever one believes, one believes. Or, in this case, doesn't believe. Funny thing about asking religion: I was filling out the census last night. I thought I could do it on my own. However, there were some questions that I needed help with. So, I asked my father. It came to questions about religion. We.... don't really have a religion. Our family has never really gone to church for Sunday morning services. Don't get me wrong - I do believe, and I do wear a cruicifix (sp?) pendant. There was a pop-up window that listed what the possible answers that could be given. Right towards the end, it listed 'atheism'. I know I ain't that. I think, in the end, I ended up putting Christian for both of us. Joker's Wilde

I remember the wedding scene in The Deer Hunter, at an actual Russian Orthodox cathedral, with an actual Russian Orthodox priest performing the ceremony. All very beautiful and ornate and traditional...and even from a Christian perspective, such a load of crap. There's still nobody that can convince me Catholics don't all think they're so much better than everyone else, all 'other' Christian denominations, they think all these baubles and candles and statues and crowns and gold lame shawls, etc., are somehow necessary, what then do they seriously think of any other church that doesn't have all this fancy decor and oh so very expensive architecture that cost millions of dollars to erect?

I'm not sure why the beauty of the church is "a load of crap", especially "from a Christian perspective". With all the ugliness preached in a simple Protestant fundamentalist church, I'd go Orthodox or Catholic any day.
I'm an atheist. But if I did ever get married it would be in a Greek Orthodox Church. It's a place for ceremony, if not worship.

Is a tent any less of a place for worship than a cathedral?

Probably not. But as an atheist I'll take the cathedral. I just see nothing wrong with beauty.
Some Protestants use beautiful churches as an argument against the Catholics and the Orthodox. I think that's ridiculous.

Makes you wonder though why all the money it took to put it together couldn't have been spent feeding the poor or helping the homeless, etc., all the things the church is inherently supposed to do. And I'll just bet if anybody actually looked into it, there would be a massive price difference in what it costs to build a Catholic church than say, Baptist, Presbyterian, Lutheran, etc. The size difference alone is mammoth. We had one church in our town that was put in what used to be the old Radio Shack building.

If the secular state can build the White House and the Washington Monument, I see nothing wrong with St. Peter's Basilica and the Hagia Sophia - or the Pyramids for that matter. There are small Catholic and Orthodox churches mind you.
Funds are put into great architecture and funds are put into social welfare. We do both.

Yeah, but they could do a hell of a lot more if they could learn to be content with a plain church like everybody else.

The money that Catholics spend on their lavish mansions could be spent to help those in need. It's a good point that only an idiot would miss.
