I remember the wedding scene in The Deer Hunter, at an actual Russian Orthodox cathedral, with an actual Russian Orthodox priest performing the ceremony. All very beautiful and ornate and traditional...and even from a Christian perspective, such a load of crap. There's still nobody that can convince me Catholics don't all think they're so much better than everyone else, all 'other' Christian denominations, they think all these baubles and candles and statues and crowns and gold lame shawls, etc., are somehow necessary, what then do they seriously think of any other church that doesn't have all this fancy decor and oh so very expensive architecture that cost millions of dollars to erect? I find many of the Catholic traditions really beautiful. My bestie had a Catholic wedding mass, and it was the most beautiful wedding I've ever seen. Every denomination has its problems. There are plenty of protestant teleavangelists on the grift, lecturing about tithing money to them as they jet-set in private planes. I'm not a fan of organized religion, but I like Joel Osteen. I listen to his Sirious channel and get a lot out of his sermons. |

The money that Catholics spend on their lavish mansions could be spent to help those in need. It's a good point that only an idiot would miss. Something else that comes to mind, whichever passage about the woman who took the expensive perfume and poured it on Jesus' head, and the church got mad saying that perfume could've been sold to buy food for the poor, etc., well it wasn't, it was just there waiting to be used, so she used it accordingly and appropriately. No, they just didn't want it being wasted on the son of some poor carpenter who they didn't deem worthy of it. That's not what church is supposed to be about. Personally, I don't attend church in the physical sense, but if I did, I'd sooner trust some small, plain type place than some huge frivolous showpiece. Anybody who knows anything about construction knows none of that stuff comes cheap, so where is the money coming from? It just rings too much of what Cragen said in one episode of SVU talking about a charity organization that takes in hundreds of millions of dollars but only actually donates one half of one percent of the proceeds to the actual cause and pocket the rest.

Oh I agree, it's very beautiful, very moving, but how much of it is actually necessary and how much is just to show and show off? That whole thing in the movie of holding crowns over the bride and groom's heads and following them as they walk around in circles, what was that supposed to be? I've never seen that in any wedding, church or otherwise.
My mom LOVED Joel Osteen, she watched him every Sunday night, she read his books, about the time he started getting facelifts though she ebbed back from him. Now she's gotten into Joyce Meyer, who I found years ago as a teenager, love what she says, I read a couple of her books, she talks a lot of sense. I always thought it was amusing because I saw a hint of resemblance to Blanche Deveraux in her, lol.

I was raised in the Greek Orthodox Church, not Catholic. We don't have a Pope. We broke with the Catholic Church a thousand of years ago and the orthodox churches are decentralized. There is Greek Orthodox, Russian Orthodox, Romanian Orthodox, and so on and so forth. Again, we don't have a Pope.
As for Protestants, they're all different. But it's the fundamentalist Protestants who are most avidly condemning gays, keeping woman "in their place", hearkening back to an antiquated way of living. If there are child molesters in the Catholic Church, of which I'm not a member anyway, there are also plenty of child molesting Protestant preachers.
And lets not forget the racism of many of the Protestant fundamentalist churches. The KKK are Protestant and hate Catholics. Do you realize that?

I wanted to put “agnostic” then, but that was not an option either. Ended up putting “spiritual without being a member of any religion”.
