I was raised in the Greek Orthodox Church, not Catholic. We don't have a Pope. We broke with the Catholic Church a thousand of years ago and the orthodox churches are decentralized. There is Greek Orthodox, Russian Orthodox, Romanian Orthodox, and so on and so forth. Again, we don't have a Pope.
As for Protestants, they're all different. But it's the fundamentalist Protestants who are most avidly condemning gays, keeping woman "in their place", hearkening back to an antiquated way of living. If there are child molesters in the Catholic Church, of which I'm not a member anyway, there are also plenty of child molesting Protestant preachers.
And lets not forget the racism of many of the Protestant fundamentalist churches. The KKK are Protestant and hate Catholics. Do you realize that?
2 years ago an Orthodox guy I know who lives in my current neighbourhood got some hate on Facebook from a guy from the Libertarian Party (sadly, he died with pancreatic disease months later) for posting "Christ is risen!" on Orthodox Easter. The Libertarian commented:

Sure, if someone was abused by a priest they'll hate the church. Much of it though is just people who are angry about being forced to go to Sunday school as children.
I blame Leviticus for thousands of years of oppression of gay people.
But I just have no visceral gut hatred for religion. There's good and bad in it like everything.

I remember the wedding scene in The Deer Hunter, at an actual Russian Orthodox cathedral, with an actual Russian Orthodox priest performing the ceremony. All very beautiful and ornate and traditional...and even from a Christian perspective, such a load of crap. There's still nobody that can convince me Catholics don't all think they're so much better than everyone else, all 'other' Christian denominations, they think all these baubles and candles and statues and crowns and gold lame shawls, etc., are somehow necessary, what then do they seriously think of any other church that doesn't have all this fancy decor and oh so very expensive architecture that cost millions of dollars to erect? I love the wedding scene from TDH. What a uniquely impressive masterpiece. My favorite performance from La Streep and Shirley Stoler, too! |

People take serious issue with a certain religion that says its celibate leaders, who must remain celibate in order to be holier than the original sinning congregates who are so evil to get married and have children, are 'God's representative on Earth', who turn around and molest hundreds/thousands of children in the church, and get away with it like a serial killer doctor who just gets moved to another hospital to do it all over again, and everybody is told turn a blind eye, because they're good people, they wouldn't do something like that, oh it's just a few bad apples, so few that the archdiocese collects THOUSANDS of files on it for over 40 years and they NEVER turn these bastards over to the police.
I was actually going to bring this up too, another way the Catholic church could save itself billions of dollars it could put towards helping the poor, is to not have to keep paying out thousands of lawsuit paying millions of dollars to former alter boys who were raped by Father Grabby for years. It would be cheaper for them and MUCH better for their public image if they would drop the hammer on these pedo priests as soon as something happens. I completely agree with Christopher Titus on this one, either they need to step aside and let the authorities handle it or step up and start crucifying pedophiles, actually handle the matter themselves. "I'd like to thank the Tarelli brothers for taking down the life sized Jesus and nailing up Father Finnegan here, yeah I...shut up! If it's good enough for the Lord Jesus it's good enough for you!" Start doing that shit on a regular basis and watch the Catholic church semi-redeem itself.
