Which of these two notoriously dark family films was scarier in your opinion? Willy Wonka does have its creepy moments, but the movie just never really bothered me all that much, not even the tunnel scene. Return to Oz on the other hand, I thought was brutal.

Neither are scary, but Return to Oz is creepier. The latter isn't a good movie imo, but it definitely has a creepiness to it.
I have never found Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory creepy, because it is so self-aware. That is why I like it. The remake is definitely creepier.

When the f'n hero crew gives you nightmares, you know it's on. Wonka wasn't scary, but it did feel far more grown up than many children's movies - Wilder never really acts like he's around children, esp when yelling at Charlie at the end.

Not that fond of the Willy Wonka film, even though I loved the book as a kid. Didn't find it that scary though.
Return to Oz is a very creepy movie. Those Wheelies - or whatever they're called - creeped me out. Definitely the scarier of the two.

I prefer Willy Wonka but Return to Oz did have some surreal and messed up imagery.

Even Dorothy looks fucking scary in that picture. She's got kind of an uncanny valley thing going.

I don't think either of these movies is scary. Willy Wonka is the better of the 2 movies.

With the exception of the Ferry Ride, Willy Wonka wasn't frightening in the least, and wasn't designed to be outside of the audience not knowing if Wonka is putting everyone on or is genuinely insane.
I never made it entirely through Return to Oz, despite several tries, but what I saw was disturbing enough to give a kid some real nightmares.
