The tagline states “Catch the excitement. Catch the adventure. Catch the Hawk.” Up until now, only knew of it by reputation. It’s all rather baffling. It isn’t particularly funny nor exciting. Bruce Willis does his perpetual wise-ass routine. He and Danny Aiello have a few good moments together.

I have never seen it. It and the Last Boy Scout indicated that Willis wasn't able to generate the kind of interest that Die Hard suggested he would. He did a Kevin Costner. Another one who was on the rise and then just fizzled out due to vanity projects.

It flopped because it was marketed as a heist action/thriller when in reality it was a zany action comedy. A lot of 'that guy' actors show up in this movie, but I can't believe they got James Coburn to do it.

Sandra Bernhard and Richard E. Grant dial it up to 100, Andie MacDowell does her best dolphin impression, etc.. I will say the moment that offered a few laughs was when Willis and Aiello have been tranquilized.

There are villains named the Mario Brothers and other villains named after candy bars. Butterfinger asks Kaplan, "You want me to rape 'em?" It's all so bizarre. The movie makes no sense, I love it. Willis plays a cat burglar whose shtick is to belt out songs as he pulls a job, because who wants to be quiet when robbing a place? The movie even breaks the fourth wall.

I was probably one of the few that saw it theatrically. It was a near empty theater. I thought it was fun but not necessarily funny. There were some moments that were laugh out loud funny but mostly just a few snickers here and there. I did think it was impressive they landed Coburn. I had the dvd and now have the bluray so you could say I still enjoy it from time to time. During that period I thought Willis could do no wrong but that was back when he was the highest paid actor in the US if I remember correctly. I’d rush out to see just about everything he did. Nowadays I feel like he doesn’t try. Did he owe Demi that much money?

The song and dance was super awkward, it wasn't sure if it wanted to go full on musical, forever hovering on the fence like a white guy dancing on the dance floor with his hands in his pockets. Or like the musical bits in Spiderman 3.

Leonard Maltin Movie Guide Review:
Hudson Hawk (1991) - 2 out of 4 stars
"Wildly overblown vanity film (Willis cowrote the story and the title song) about a cat burglar, just sprung from prison, who's blackmailed into performing several daring art heists, including one from the Vatican! Blissfully incoherent, with some good action scenes, but nothing to hang them on except a steady stream of Willis wisecracks, only some of which are funny."

One of the very first things you must do when writing a script is to decide what kind of movie you're making. Bruce Willis, Steven E. De Souza, Daniel Waters and Robert Kraft didn't do that with HUDSON HAWK. Many nonsensical moments indicate that this is supposed to be a parody, but other moments indicate that it's supposed to be a serious comedy. Also, is this supposed to be for adults or children? The language and themes are R-rated, but some characters, places, objects and even sound effects come from cartoons. I was surprised that Willis, Richard Grant and Sandra Bernhard were nominated for the Razzies. Not that they didn't deserve it, but I felt that Andie McDowell's performance was worse than all of theirs. 1/10 ------------------------------------- You can read comments of other movies in my blog.

I like it but what I enjoy the most is the cut/transitions (I'm not that good with all the specific terms), like the way he fall from the roof straight into the couch or when in Rome he jumps off the bus (If I remember correctly) and lands in the chair across the table from Andie MacDowell.

I do love James Coburn's first scene:
"The last time you saw me, I was bald, with a beard and no mustache, and I had a different nose. So if you don't recognize me, I won't be offended."
