B-
I legit hadn't ever watched it fully before, as a kid I'd thought it was a girl's movie & I suppose when you're 13 it is. Aside the stuff that hasn't aged well, it does have some decent laughs. I can see some of the DNA for Home Alone here, the full family chaos house, Anthony Michael Hall looks like Macauley Culkin. Its nuanced premise runs out of steam barely 1/3rd in, & then turns into some high school frat party style flick. Hall's Geek character takes centre stage & he's the real star here. After the house party I nearly forgot about Ringwald. The parade of early 80's slang was funny.

7.5/10 - Used to be an 8 for me, but I rewatched it recently, and sadly, it’s not as great to me now. But I still like it.

16 CANDLES is very funny, but John Hughes shouldn't have used those cartoon sound effects. I'd understand it if this was just an over-the-top teen comedy, but it tries to be more than that: It tries to be a coming-of-age dramedy and that kind of thing almost ruins it. It's like when a president doesn't hide an embarrassing sibling because they thinks they'll look like an ass if they do it. Well, they will still do. Most of the secondary characters have at least 1 memorable moment each. I'm still trying to put the puzzle together. If his last name is DONG, his 1st name LONG and his middle name DUK, then he must be called... Hmmm... Anyway, despite what I just said, I still wished they had eliminated 1 or 2 characters in order for the story to move just a little bit faster. Which brings me to my next point: This easily could've been bad because the conflict would've been over immediately if SAMANTHA & JAKE had talked at the beginning, but it's not like Hughes stretches the problem because it's actually more complex and relatable than it sounds. Sure, it will make you feel impatient. Not because you'll wish for the movie to be over, but because you'll wish to see them talking already. The difference is that the latter means that you'll feel a connection to the story and the characters during the 1st act. It usually doesn't happen until the last part. 7/10 ------------------------------------- You can read comments of other movies in my blog.
