you're thinking of watching for the first time? I regret taking so long, btw, It's a wonderful movie! I know all the music, why did it take me so long! That classic scene of Julie Andrew's twirling in the mountains seemed boring. for shame.

I haven't seen the movie. But I did participate in its quote thread and that was a lot of fun.

It's one of those Best Picture winners that's constantly derided by cinema snobs, so that many people don't like to admit that they really enjoy it. A great movie; love those nuns and how they vandalize the German vehicles at the end. I also liked the fact that perennial "ghost singer" Marni Nixon gets to appear and sing for herself for a change in this movie.

Always enjoyed this film, it's been a favorite since I was a kid. I haven't watched it in a long time though. One thing that always confused me when I was younger was that I always wondered (based off of circa 1980's borders when I watched the film a lot) how von Trapp could have been an officer in the Austrian navy. I didn't realize until later that at the time of the First World World, Austria Hungary had a large navy and access to the Adriatic Sea.
A classic I have yet to see that I want to is From Here to Eternity. Never saw that one for some reason.

Hated to even have heard about it in my youth, sounded like something who those who gives apples to thier teachers liked.
The music in it self won me over, and finally the movie in it self.
Think Robert Wise and his staff did the right thing, re-arrange the musical numbers to make it work as a whole movie, unlike other Rodger's and Hammersteins versions.

Catman finds it interesting that the melody of 'How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria' is used in the wedding march.

Catman finds it interesting that the melody of 'How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria' is used in the wedding march. Nuns: "Hey, she's not our problem anymore. Thanks for takin' her off our hands, Captain!" Then they all went back to the convent and partied till dawn. Woooo-hoooo!

Good movie and one of my favorite musicals. It is a beautiful looking movie and has memorable and entertaining songs. This is where many musicals fall flat for me, the songs aren't that good. The 1960's had the best musicals. West Side Story and My Fair Lady are good too. 4 musicals that won Best Picture that decade. I haven't seen Oliver! yet.
7.5/10

Thanks to everyone for sharing their knowledge about The Sound of Music and interest in checking out more classics. I didn't even know it was based on a real story. I still can't believe myself. Oh well, at least now I can start watching it every year. Cheers everyone.
