What can I say except golfers relate to other golfers and wish they themselves could be pros. It's difficult to relate to a football player for example as these guys are huge men and incredible athletes. Spot on - football players are tremendous athletes Same goes for boxers and basketball players etc. You just can't relate to them.

So you don't actually like sports. I mean I've suspected this for a while, but this confirms it. "I don't get it, why would anyone get excited watching sports?" I don't want to open up a whole can of worms here or bring this up for the 8 millionth time but is golf a sport?
And watching sports - sure
I get excited watching sports
But getting exciting over another grown singular man who does not represent a team but represents himself?
Just seems off to me
Favorite boxers - Tyson, De La Hoya, Hopkins, Hamed, Gatti.......I love watching their matches; however cannot see screaming one on to victory. Same goes for Agassi.
Do I admire their work? Absolutely
But if you watch that clip above - the level of excitement by grown adults over another grown adult (who has 0 clue who they are and does not care who they are) - I just don't get it I don't like golf, so you don't have to waste your time with that faux argument. But in general, yeah, you get excited watching sports if you're a sports fan. That's kind of the point in following the sport, whatever it might be. Personally I think the gallery was out of control from what I saw yesterday, and frankly a lot of that has to do with alcohol, and also the fact that fans haven't been allowed at these events due to covid. People were just excited to be back out there, I imagine. Are you surprised when the crowd roars at tennis or boxing matches? Why do you think they're doing that? They're voicing their appreciation for the athlete's effort, they don't have to know the athlete personally to do that. Do you only cheer for the boxers that know you personally, as if that's a prerequisite for your support? Let me try to follow your logic for a minute. "You can be a 'grown man' cheering for another 'grown man' as long as that athlete (who is originally from thousands of miles away) is wearing a shirt with the city I live in printed on it. Otherwise the entire exercise is ridiculous." Such an odd take, even by your standards.

I think I see what you're saying here
You play golf and are passionate about the game so you can relate to them a bit and when they're playing a part of you can maybe relate to what they are going through.......

I love my city
Therefore I root and cheer for them
For people who just appreciate the game of golf and the sport of boxing or tennis - yes - I comprehend appreciating the beauty of play which I do from the comfort of my home on TV
However I do not comprehend grown adults following another grown man on a golf course jumping up and down screaming in jubilation as if they have just won the lottery
I always wondered if these guys were married/had girlfriends what their wives/girlfriends thought
Look at my 40 year old husband going ape over another 40 year old grown man
Quite attractive, eh?
But I'm guessing these are the same 40 year old men who wear Tom Brady jerseys in the supermarket

Again, this is alcohol as well as the, "I'm on TV so I better act like a moron," impulse that I've never understood. But everything else you've said makes no sense. Those athletes don't know you, don't care about you. They aren't even from Philadelphia. They're there because they're paid to be there. They'll leave when someone pays them more. But it's ok to cheer for them because their shirt says Philadelphia on it. Nothing else is worth cheering for. It's crazy. The antics of those people yesterday aside, you cheer because you appreciate the game and the effort the athletes are putting forth. They don't need to be representing you. It's actually fascinating that you view it this way. Is your self-worth completely entwined with your sports teams? Reading your posts always makes me appreciate my own fandom. I'm not afraid to criticize my own athletes and teams when they make bad decisions. I root for them when they do well or poorly, as long as the effort is there. But I don't blindly root for assholes just because they play for my region and I don't believe anyone is above criticism. And I can appreciate great play, no matter who is doing it. This legitimately makes me think you don't like sports. The fact that you can't understand why somebody would get excited watching a sporting event that doesn't 'represent' them speaks volumes.

Same reason I wear a Batman or a Blade Runner or a Red Sox or an Acadia National Park shirt. Because I like those things. It isn't complicated.

Goes back to years ago making a member a Gin & Tonic as he was sweating profusely and frantically asked me, 'How's Ricky Doing!'
I said, 'Who?'
He said, 'Ricky! How's he doing!'
At first I though Ricky was another member who may be sick or maybe another employee who just seriously got hurt
I said, 'Ricky?'
Angered he snapped, 'Ricky Fowler! How is he playing today!'
I had no clue. I started cutting garnishes and filled up his peanut bowl and told him I had to go to the back for more inventory
I returned as more members had just come off the golf course as they took their seats at the bar.
Hooting and hollering over 'Ricky' pounding their fists on the bar. Wincing with every shot screaming 'Get in the hole!' Atta Boy Ricky!

I stated half a dozen times 'To each their own'

I don't really get that either, but it has nothing to do with anything I posted. Maybe they had money riding on it.

I'm not taking it as a personal attack, that wasn't even a reply to you. I don't think it's a big deal at all, we've had this conversation a million times. Wear what makes you comfortable.

That dude rolling down the hill is priceless. Not a golf fan, but I actually attended the US Women's Open in 2004 because how often does a major sporting event happen in the pioneer valley? Anyhoo there were times where I knew I was on camera because I was directly behind the golfer, across from where the camera was stationed. I'm pretty sure you wouldn't notice me even if you were looking for me, not only because I'm a ninja but because I wasn't trying to be seen. These idiots are trying to be seen, those aren't natural reactions. It's a combination of what I mentioned earlier, and mob mentality. They're completely out of control because the event let them get that way. That guy rolling down the hill would've done that no matter who hit the shot, he probably doesn't know who Mickelson is.

And these are the grown adults that I am referring to (and the members of the Country Club where I bartended)
And again - to each their own. I have numerous hobbies and interests that others don't get
But I've just always found these people to be fascinating
And I do find them completely different than hockey, baseball, basketball and football fans - as they are behaving this way over an individual (as opposed to a team who may represent your city) who happens to be a grown man when you yourself are a grown man
But whatever makes you happy in life
I've just always been fascinated by them
