Check out the 1954 Prince Valiant. Star Wars is a remake of this FOX film. You got a black knight just like Vader, you have a magic sword, you got a Han Solo guy (Sterling Hayden), an awards scene at the end just like Star Wars and the hero is a farm boy. They wanted Flash Gordon-but once they saw they couldn't get it they just switched to Prince Valiant. What original vision? It is a sci-fi remake. No wonder they didn't have a sequel in place. Gary Kurtz said that "May the Force Be With You" was meant to be medieval --Prince Valiant is medieval. This is the first I'm hearing of Prince Valiant. Usually I hear A New Hope was already busy being a sci-fi remake of The Hidden Fortress, and the similarities there are pretty obvious. Yup. Yeah calling SW a remake of Prince Valiant isn’t the most accurate summarization of SW. Even calling it a remake of The Hidden Fortress (alone) begs for a little clarification. It’s probably more accurate to describe it as an amalgamation of stories, themes and character types borrowed from both of them. And from other classic films and film genres. screenrant.com/star-wars-franchise-influenced-inspired-by-western-samurai-movies-george-lucas/^^ (This is a good read about classic films Lucas borrowed from. Rian Johnson also borrowed from a few of them)

I have it on DVD and when I watch it on widescreen using my blu-ray player I do not get black boxes on all four sides only top and bottom. So it works fine for me.

An "untouched" original negative from 1977 does not exist anymore. That negative had badly deteriorated by the 1990s and had to be dipped in a chemical bath and manually-cleaned for restoration over the course of 1994/1995. A new negative was made from this restoration and is now sitting in a vault somewhere.
The technology exists to scan the "restored negative" of the original 1977 Star Wars anywhere from 2K to 16K resolution, color correct it in the digital realm with high dynamic range (HDR), remix the original 70mm-6 track/Dolby 4.2 soundtrack in Dolby Atmos and release it on 4K Blu-ray disc. It's just a matter of getting high-level filmmakers with a passion for Star Wars like J.J. Abrams to lead the way in pushing for such a release.

I wonder if George Lucas would still be able to block this, or if it would be entirely up to Disney to make such a decision.

That's something I admire about Lucas--he has such a quirky view on this stuff--he said he does not care if people alter the movies as much as they want-as long as he doesn't have his name on it.
He could have been mad about Troops or other fan films--George Lucas in Love--but he doesn't care. He even juried one of the fan films festivals.
