The one thing I might give Kong '76 over '05 is Grodin being a better "Carl". And it perhaps being more inspired to set it in the modern day instead of 1933 again, but that doesn't really amount to much.
Kong '05 is bloated, but with a better actor as Carl (PSH?) and cutting down on the Good Jimmy Hunting stuff it might rival the original. It certainly has the best characterization of Ann and Kong himself.
I don't know if anyone's mentioned it yet, but Kong '76 is one sleazy movie. Obviously Kong has always had a bit more than friendship on his mind, but this Ann actually seems into it. And Jack cheering as Kong swats down innocent pilots just trying to defend their city from what appears to be a giant monster rubs me the wrong way. It also shared the same problem I had with Skull Island: where are the goddamn dinosaurs?!

Jack was told the ape would be captured and not killed. Not sure how they would be able to net him when atop the WTC. Kong’s bloody demise looks as if it was directed by Peckinpah.
