The original was all right, but I don't think we need an unnecessary sequel after 29 years. Leonard Maltin Movie Guide Review: Hocus Pocus (1993) - 1.5 out of 4 stars
"Lonely male teen in Salem, Mass., conjures up three long-deceased witches who can only sustain themselves by sucking the life out of children. Someone certainly sucked the humor out of this ghoulish, effects-laden concoction. Hammy to the extreme, and a discredit to Disney "family entertainment"." www.yahoo.com/entertainment/hocus-pocus-2-disney-plus-2022-184839694.html'Hocus Pocus 2' will premiere on Disney+ in fall 2022 "It won't be much longer until we get a sequel to cult classic Hocus Pocus. Disney will release Hocus Pocus 2 on its streaming platform in the fall of 2022. What's more, Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker will reprise their roles as the Sanderson Sisters. In the new film, three young women accidentally bring back the witches to the site of modern-day Salem, Massachusetts. Why do we get the sense that Disney is setting the stage for additional sequels? A new Hocus Pocus movie is something Disney had been working on since before you could even subscribe to Disney+. According to the company, production on the new film will start this fall, with Anne Fletcher (27 Dresses, The Proposal) taking over directing duties from Adam Shankman (The Wedding Planner, A Walk to Remember) due to scheduling conflicts. The latter will oversee the production alongside producers Lynn Harris and executive producers Ralph Winter and David Kirschner. Hocus Pocus 2 is the kind of thing you can easily see becoming a massive hit for Disney+. The original was neither a commercial nor financial hit when it first came out back in 1993. But thanks to annual Halloween airings on the Disney Channel, the film became a cult classic. In an era of constant reboots, it doesn't get much better than an early 90s favorite."

It is a pretty beloved movie. Not every movie that was released 30 years ago still has merchandise available for purchase at retail. It's basically the Home Alone of Halloween.

It is a pretty beloved movie. Not every movie that was released 30 years ago still has merchandise available for purchase at retail. It's basically the Home Alone of Halloween. But Disney can churn out as much merchandising junk as it wants to. That doesn't mean people like the movie, it just means Disney will churn out the junk.
How much Disney merchandise ends up in landfills?

This has been in the works for some time so getting a preliminary release date means they are really serious about. That said, Hocus Pocus was never a movie I was ecstatic about when I was younger so its popularity is perplexing to me. It has some funny scenes and the Sanderson sisters are so camp, but it's not much to write home about.

I haven't watched the original since I was a kid, but I remember it fondly and always appreciated the Halloweeny atmosphere. A sequel sounds interesting. Not that Disney have a particularly great track record with those.
