For some reason, considering the magnitude and high sensationailsm of her murders, Elizabeth Bathory is not all that well known. For me the reason why she is perhaps the darkest of these dark, profoundly disturbed individuals is the cold-blooded nature of her crimes. Bathing in virgin blood. Yikes! But I had never heard of her until I saw the movie Hostel 2. The scene where Heather Matarazzo gets hung upside down and all the rest... Terrible movie, but brutally effective. Eli Roth must be one sick puppy. But Albert Fish takes the cake for me. Those dead eyes are too much. i wonder how much of what is said about her was really true though... A lot of is enhanced and glorified, and the truth, while still horrific, is nothing quite so exotic.

I am getting quite the education here. I had absolutely no idea that there were this many serial monsters in our history (not to mention, the ones on our streets today).

Never heard of him.
A couple others that come to mind for me are Fritz Haarmann, who would bite the throats out of teenage boys he had sex with, and Peter Kurten, for his time I think he was considered one of THE worst of the worst.

John Bunting, and his associates. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snowtown_murdersThe whole thing was just messed up. They murdered close friends and even family members of theirs, with Bunting claiming that he was "cleansing" society of paedophiles and people he perceived to be weak. He had such a hold on his associates that they committed murders and other violent acts without question. I've only recently heard of him as well. There was a person on Reddit on one of those "Scariest real life things that have happened to you" topics who lived in the same area as Dean Corll, and whose sister was dating one of the boys who Corll murdered. So many teenage boys were disappearing that people in the neighbourhood just assumed they had left town seeking adventures, so no suspicions were raised to the fact they were really being killed.

I don't know. Fish talked about frying up the girl's buttocks with some onions and carrots and how good she tasted. I don't think that is going to bring peace of mind to any parent. Agreed, which is why I addressed that. Overall though I think it would be nice to know my 10-year old daughter wasn't raped or butchered, at least before death. Then again, I am only able to comment on it from my perspective. If the parents have issues with what happens after death (which they likely did, as most people do to some extent or another) then it is a lot more disturbing. Once the death occurs the rest in the letter doesn't mean much to me. I agree with what you say about violence inflicted on a living person being much worse than upon a corpse. I get that. Maybe it has something to do with some kind of ultimate disrespect paid upon the soul or something... Dunno. I never thought grave robbers were all that bad. lol

I looked up both killers and they were very dark individuals, indeed. Both around the same time period, both German and both were called "vampires". Eeeek!

A couple British monsters
Peter Sutcliffe, “The Yorkshire Ripper “ butchered 13 women
Ian Brady and Myra Hindley, the “Moor Murderers” . Raped and killed four children. Completely without remorse.
And a Russian, Andrew Chikatilo. 52 women and children in the USSR. Made a good movie about him, Citizen X

I'm reading short bios of these people and they all have one thing in common (aside from their heinous crimes!)... they all horrible childhoods.
All except one: Jeffrey Dahmer -- His childhood seemed pretty mild. I know his mom was addicted to speed, but then in the 60s and 70s, a lot of housewives were abusing diet pills. But it's interesting that maybe the sickest of these individuals was the one who couldn't turn to an abusive childhood as any kind of defense.

And, in the case of a great percentage, you'll hear neighbors and acquaintances say the same thing "Gee, he was such a nice guy. He seemed normal". Exceptions, of course, I bet no one ever said that about Ed Gein. But I know people said it about Dean Corll, Dennis Rader, Ted Bundy, David Berkowitz, John Gacy.

Yeah, I thought that was one hell of a coincidence myself.

I recently picked up a magazine about true crime, serial killers, etc., and I think it was on Bundy's page, a quote was listed from a neighbor who said 'He doesn't LOOK like a serial killer', I know people were less enlightened back then but seriously, what would you expect a serial killer to LOOK like?

Wikipedia also says that Aileen Wuornos was a serial killer. But, wasn't she more like a spree killer?

Wikipedia also says that Aileen Wuornos was a serial killer. But, wasn't she more like a spree killer? I honestly question if Aileen really fits the serial killer mold. Mostly because she was not a sadist. She derived no sick pleasure from her killings. She did not torture her victims. She shot them point blank and then she robbed them. Nothing else. Personally I think Aileen saw the world as a frightening place and was just on hyper alert. Taking her childhood into account, it is very easy to understand her crimes. Aileen is the only one on this list I think could have been rehabilitated. In her interviews there are moments when her interviewer Nick shows her a bit of kindness and she lights up. It is heartwrenching to watch. Aileen wasn't crazy or evil and she wasn't a monster. She was scared and she was angry. But I think she fits on this list simply because it goes to show how somebody who might have had a chance in life can go all wrong if they are that much hurt. Which Aileen certainly was. RIP, sweet Aileen

Clifford Olson is another evil monster that never gets on these lists either. Actually, we just had the conviction of a serial killer, right here in the Greater Toronto Area. The SOB is in his 60s too. He was convicted of the murder 8 gay men, mostly of Middle Eastern & South Asian descent. Bruce McArthur

We get a lot of news from Toronto, being just across the border. I still can’t believe Karla Homolka is a free woman.
