I guess I'm comparing them because they're often accused of being "Spielberg-lite", which do you prefer? Zemmeckis for me (I liked Roger Rabbit more than pretty much anything Howard made)

Zemeckis, although I like both.

Zemeckis. Apollo 13 was great, yet I even really like Polar Express & Christmas Carol.

Zemeckis, but Howard is a fine director as well.

Honestly, I've never really gotten why Howard is considered Spielberg-lite, Zemeckis I get, Howard not so much. Is it because he likes casting Tom Hanks? I mean like, Night Shift, Far and Away, Parenthood, Willow, The Paper, Ransom, EDTV, A Beautiful Mind, The Missing, Rush etc., none of those really seem like Spielberg films to me.

Just barely giving the edge to Robert Zemeckis.

Joe Dante beats them both as far as I'm concerned.

I have never heard of Ron Howard being called Spielberg lite, nor do I see how he how someone could call him that.
Zemeckis is the better director overall, but I like them about equally.

Zemeckis because of Cast Away, Roger Rabbit, and his two mo-cap Christmas movies.

Ron Howard strikes me as a good craftsman who bats for average, while Robert Zemeckis knocks them out of the park with moments of great technical innovation while making clunkers in between. But I haven't kept up with either in a while.

A bit of an interesting aspect of this (for me at least) is that Cast Away is the most impressive directing showcase that I've seen from either of them, but it's pretty much an exact Spielberg mimicry.

Zemeckis directed the BTTF trilogy and Roger Rabbit, so he earns my vote without much contest.

I'd say Zemeckis.
