Retro. I can't get into most modern games for some reason.

Since we're talking about 'retro' games here, i just want to be sure what the topic is. It's games that are somewhat new but try to look old right? Like shovel knight and 3d dot game heroes? I'm not a fan of that at all. Because so like, they make games using newer hardware but they try to go backwards in technology. Or something like that, doesn't really work really in my opinion. Example:they had technologically advanced/smoother hardware which they used to design the game shovel knight. But the game is made to look old/ look like crap visually.
It'd be like if they tried to make a retro version of the first tomb raider.

Retro, though I'm not sure where the cutoff is. I heard someone refer to the PS2 as a retro console. Maybe I've turned into a boomer, because I considered the PS2 generation (and above) to be modern.

The only computer games I play are complex, reality-based historical strategy & tactics games...

Some RTS game are really good (like Close Combat, Total War etc..) but the turn-based games seem to capture military strategy/tactics a lot better. Starcraft and AoC are a joke when it comes to real military tactics. You should try out Close Combat, its really good at squad level tactics. Some things about CC could be a lot better though. Even though the game has been out for years, it still has little quirks about it that make you shake your head. lol...
But from what I've noticed ever since I started playing the turn-based games about 8 or 9 years ago, TB games are really good at simulating combat. It all started when I played Panzer Corps, which is basically a remake of the 90's classic Panzer General which I actually never played. But I've been playing them ever since.
When you look at a screen-shot of these games, they don't look like much but they're a lot of fun to play. Panzer Corps is not hard to learn either. Some TB games are a bitch to learn though.

Not sure if this is true or not but apparently the Korean military hires excellent Starcraft players

It could be true, SC is alright at the strategic side of warfare but still not that good at simming tactics. At the end of the day, it's really about how fast you can build up troops and whatnot.
Close Combat was actually designed for the military but later became a retail video game. The idea was to see how combat effects the the psychological disposition of soldiers. CC has a "morale model". Sometimes they won't even follow your commands because of how the battle is effecting them psychologically or in many cases, they get pinned down and simply won't move.
lol... some people say it's too realistic, but it's still a lot of fun to play. At least, I think it is. And it captures the essence of warfare really well and that's the main reason why I like it, you just can't do "dumb things" in this game and expect to win. However, I would like to see some changes in the game. If they could just make path finding better, it would improve the game by leaps and bounds. Sometimes you can order a squad to go into a building and only 2/3rds of the squad actually makes it all the way in, leaving the others just sitting there getting mowed down by enemy gun-fire. little things like this could be a lot better.
