Last seen in 2001. Checked out the 197 minute cut last night. Even with some of the restored footage in less than ideal quality (some lost scenes are just represented by still image with audio), much of the movie looks really fucking good; detail is excellent and the colors are exceptionally rich. There is a 5 minute piece about the work putting into the restoration and helps to better appreciate the end results. As for the movie itself? Had a pretty good time. The jokes hit more than miss, though the movie sometimes thinks destruction automatically means funny. I had to roll my eyes when one of the few black actors, Eddie 'Rochester' Anderson, is tossed from the ladder of a firetruck right into the arms of an Abraham Lincoln statue. Despite a length that rivals Spartacus, it still moved at a pretty good pace. Much has been made about the cast and its many, many cameos. Sid Caesar. Phil Silvers, and Terry Thomas fare pretty well, while Ethel Merman goes above and beyond to be unlikable. Spencer Tracy is the straight man to all this lunacy and also quite good.

IT'S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD 9/10 I consider RAT RACE to be an unofficial remake of IT'S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD. Specially since it has the same title in Spanish. One of the few things I didn't like about the original was the climax, where all the characters were literally thrown around. It was very mean-spirited. I know the rest of the movie may have seem mean too, but it really wasn’t. The difference was thin, but it was there. Anyway, this movie is mean-spirited from beginning to end. And I was annoyed by the way every single object was coincidentally placed in the right place for every gag. It was too convenient. Well, maybe I'm looking too much into it. Maybe it wouldn't have bothered me if the comedy had been funny. The ending sucks. The sentimentality is phony, and it doesn't fit with the rest of movie. 3/10 ------------------------------------- You can read comments of other movies in my blog.

I watched it again a few months ago and thoroughly enjoyed it....I have a real soft spot for those big 1960s epic chase/race movies. Will have to check this disc out.
Worth seeing just for Dick Shawn and Terry Thomas

7.5/10. It is a wacky zany comedy extravaganza.

I refer to this movie as a comedy epic. It's 3 hrs long and doesn't feel like it. Such a great cast.
One of greatest comedy movies ever made. Several movies copied it's formula such as The Scavenger Hunt, Million Dollar Mystery and Rat Race.

For the most part, those deleted scenes should have stayed deleted. The comedy works better without them.

Comedy sludge. You can't expect a movie to be funny just because you've jammed a bunch of comedians into it. Leaden timing, pointless manic yelling and mugging, endless car chases and destruction, and a complete lack of wit make for a sadly unfunny comedy. The one time I laughed was at Jerry Lewis' brief cameo (because of real-life idiots who do the kind of thing he does in the movie), so that says something.

I saw this in 1963 and have the dvd.
Can't say it's a laugh out loud movie for me (except Winters destroying the gas station), but the parade of comedians giving their all (for many at the end of their careers) makes its great length worthwhile. Best viewed if you "turn off your mind, relax and float downstream" with all the frenetic madness.

Agree with the consensus, certainly with Phantom. I saw it in the seventies and it wasn't great then either. Jonathon Winters is the bright spot in my view. It isn't bad. It just looks like a lot of comedy starts thrown together.
That's what makes it get a low grade from me, because I can't stand "waste of resources". If this was a bunch of no name people it would get a 6/10 from me, but the waste of talent and budget and resources brings it down to 4/10 from me. It isn't bad, but it isn't good.

A lot of memorable actors, characters and performances, but the story is too simple and silly too be so long. The comedy is hit or miss for me and sometimes just plain annoying and the last act REALLY drags. At about 30 minutes before the end I was just bored and wanted it too end.
5.5/10
I love the score though and The Simpsons does a very unsubtle, but entertaining reference to the movie.
