What are some famous pieces of popular music people might struggle to name? I get this all the time, where I hear a piece of music for the umpteenth time and say to myself, "Ah, it's that piece again". I often experience this when I hear music on film soundtracks or being used in random commercials.
Most recently for me, it was a tune called 'Saint Tropez', which it turns out was performed by the great jazz musician and film composer Francis Lai and his orchestra.

Theme from Apocalypse Now perhaps. Most know it's Wagner but...

Having not clicked on any of the links as of yet, I don't think I know who originated any of those, though I do know some of the songs. But I'm a case in point as I'm hopeless remembering names of songs, and even moreso when it comes to classical compositions and jazz pieces.

My mind is often in Benny Hill mode!

I strongly suspect Yakety Sax was playing here. It might have been Benny's exit music.

Speaking of Yakety Sax and Benny Hill, there is this website: bennyhillthis.com/You can input the URL of any YouTube video and it will both speed it up and add Yakety Sax as the soundtrack! I particularly like the Yakety Sax version of this car chase from the Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies. Input www.youtube.com/watch?v=RN63LoWs1XU into the "Enter YouTube Link here:" box and enjoy!

Barbara Windsor said Benny Hill was a stone-cold genius, no question. I've no doubt she knew exactly what she was talking about.

What you are experiencing is a phenomenon identified by my husband as an OTO: "Oh, that one," although with him--and me!--it's a little different from what you cite, in that I will mention a title and he won't recognize it, but if I find it on YouTube and play it, then he'll say, "Oh, that one!" ...hence, OTO.

Here are a few others people may recognize ("I've heard that, a lot, I just can't put a name to it"):
One from the "Master of Twang":
And yet another change of pace (my apologies for the primitive sound quality):

If you have watched any shorts from the Golden Age, you have heard it. I always thought it was just incidental background music written by Carl Stalling. Powerhouse has been around for a long time

This keeps cropping up in a lot of places, mostly trailers and talent shows (magicians and escapologists seem to love the track)
Not many seem to realise its taken from a grim film about depression composed by a Brummie Grebo
